- I facilitate DONA International-approved Birth Doula Skills Workshops in 2- and 4-week formats for the Simkin Center for Allied Birth Vocations at Bastyr University. These 32-hour workshops meet 3 requirements for DONA International certification: 1) The Birth Doula Workshop, 2) Introduction to Childbirth and 3) Breastfeeding for Doulas components. Our workshops are rigorous, robust, fast-paced and equip you with the introductory skills and knowledge to get you successfully started as a Birth Doula.
- Summary of qualifications
- My primary qualification is my active, thriving birth doula practice that I've maintained as a certified PALS and DONA International Birth Doula since 2000 allowing me to remain up to date with local perinatal practices and maintain strong relationships with local hospital leaders. Additionally, I hold current certifications, approvals, and teaching qualifications with DONA International (Certified Birth Doula and Approved Trainer), Lamaze International Certified Childbirth Educator (LCCE), International Childbirth Education Association Certified Childbirth Educator (ICCE), Evergreen Perinatal Education Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), Parent Trust for Washington Children Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE), PALS Doulas Certified Doula (CD). I am a voracious consumer of continuing education, and my workshops are constantly and consistently updated to reflect local and national changes in perinatal research and obstetrical practice when they occur.
- Style of teaching
- I believe people come to a doula workshop inherently curious and ready to learn. My job is to: 1) Stoke that curiosity, 2) Push people to grow beyond what they thought was possible to learn in four days, and 3) Increase self-efficacy and confidence so folks use their new skills and knowledge immediately after the workshop. I highly value in-person, hands-on teaching using interactive techniques that allow people to physically practice the doula’s communication and physical comfort skillsets. I also value using accessible, interactive between-class platforms that allow people to learn basic content on their own and then apply those concepts with an instructor and peers for in-person feedback and assessment. Creating welcoming workshops that support people learning as much about themselves as they will about birthing families is always my goal.

What can I say about Kim other than she is absolutely incredible!! Kim was my instructor for birth doula training back in November 2021 and I couldn't have asked for a better mentor. Even well after training, I have been able to reach out to Kim for advice and further education whenever I have been unsure about something related to a birth I supported or will support in the future. I had the privilege to have Kim as my birth doula trainer. She is so experienced and shared so much knowledge with us that after my trainig I felt I was prepared to atend my first birth with a lot of confidence. Kim was a wealth of knowledge and through the 4 weeks we spent together in class, she taught not only the basics of what a Birth Doula needs to know, but so much more.
I left her class feeling very prepared for my journey as a Doula. Thanks to her, I have been able to start working immediately and feel confident and prepared with every Birth I attend. I also feel that the tips and tricks she gave us on how to launch our doula business has helped me gain many referrals and clients from the get go.

I have attended one of Kim's trainings in March. All I can say it was amazing! She is very passionate, talented, charismatic trainer.
