Summary of qualifications

Gifted Hands International (GHI), founded in 2018, provides advanced comprehensive birth and postpartum doula training using a blend of holistic strategies and medical knowledge. We empower and equip our graduates to be effective members of the birth work community because we know that effective doula support can literally save lives! Our training ensures graduates receive a heighted body of knowledge to increase their effectiveness as they serve patients at the highest risk of maternal morbidity and mortality. With our primary focus to reduce racial and ethnic maternal health disparities, we commit to producing and providing advanced trained doulas to communities with a high minority presence at affordable rates.

Style of teaching

Our CEO Shana Phillips has over a decade of experience as a birth worker. In the beginning of her career however, after completing a 3-day doula training from a top ranking organization she felt grossly under prepared to serve clients. It took years of independent study and subsequent trainings before she felt she was skilled enough to be effective. As her career progressed she became the mentor program coordinator for a doula organization. There she provided mentorship and continued education training to over 300 doulas. What she learned during that time was that many organizations follow the same 3-day training model which unfortunately left a lot of its participants feeling undertrained. Shan decided she wanted to do something to address the gaps that the three day training caused, so she created the G.I.F.T. Training model. With a blend of evidence based lectures and practical training, the G.I.F.T. Model provides a hands on approach to deliver more comprehensive trainings that produces highly proficient doulas, equipped to educate, encourage and empower birthing families.
