Emily is an absolutely fantastic doula who supported me and my partner all the way from the first trimester through childbirth and postpartum. We first contacted her around week 10 of my pregnancy, and she immediately provided both support and resources. We met twice during the second and third trimesters to get to know each other and discuss our birth plan, and she was in touch via phone and text whenever I needed guidance. Emily lent us several birth books and DVDs from her personal library, and we even did a session of prenatal yoga.
When I found out that baby was transverse breech late in the third trimester, Emily provided a huge list of online exercises and resources as well as local acupuncturists and chiropractors to help me avoid a scheduled C-section. Thanks to the exercises, baby flipped head down by 35 weeks.
COVID-19 settled in a month before my due date and I began to panic about the birth. Emily reassured us that she would be by our side, and she was. As I approached (and passed) my due date, Emily recommended exercises to induce labor naturally. I finally went into labor at 40+4 and Emily helped me labor at home as long as possible. She spent the night with us laboring at the hospital and guided me through contractions, helped me to consider any medical interventions, and somehow also found time to photograph our birth journey. I was so grateful to have her there to guide me through the birth, supporting both me and my husband. She also made sure we established breastfeeding, and I know she would have helped in that direction if we had any troubles.
I treasure the photos Emily took for us during labor and birth, as well as a few days postpartum with our newborn. In these unpredictable times, Emily helped us to create a bubble of peace around our birth and postpartum period. I would recommend her to any of my friends, and hope to work with her again through future pregnancies. Thank you Emily!
With Emily by my side, the birth of my third baby was a beautiful, supportive, and encouraging experience. Emily showed up for me when my chosen doula needed unexpected backup. The first time we met I was in the middle of labor, but with her warmth and professionalism, she fit in seamlessly with my birth team right away. My husband says her arrival "Was such a relief!" She provided compassionate care and empowering encouragement. I am not sure how much Emily knew about my history, but I considered her support to be trauma informed. As a mother and as a support professional trained in birth work myself, I highly recommend Emily Lovejoy Gourlie. Her support is invaluable.
Emily was a great prenatal and labor/delivery doula! I found her from a doula list website and after contacting a few doulas, I met with her for an interview. My first impressions were that she was sweet, friendly, and calm, which was the personality I was looking for.
I had 2 at-home yoga sessions with her, along with time for questions/answers with my husband and Emily. She told us what we could expect during contractions and when we should go to the hospital.
My labor started in the morning and I rushed to the hospital since the contractions were coming on so quickly and intensely. We called Emily to give an update (after those beginning contractions) and she was able to arrive there soon after. During my 8 hour labor, she kept me calm, massaged my feet, hands, and back, squeezed my hips during pushing, and helped me with switching labor positions. Her calm voice soothed me. During the final pushing stages, Emily helped hold up my legs and encouraged me when to push. She also helped my husband know what to do durng the labor and delivery time. This really helped us because it was our first child who was born!
I definitely recommend Emily to any first-time (or more) families. She was awesome!
Emily is an amazing birth doula! Giving birth to our first baby, we weren’t sure if we needed a doula because of the extra expense. Babies are expensive! After learning more about the benefits of having a doula and natural childbirth, I started interviewing doulas and was lucky to find Emily through the doulamatch website. I knew she was a great fit from the first time I met her at Blossom Birth. She has a calming and easy going personality which helped ease my anxiety about having our first baby. We had two prenatal visits at our home. The first visit was a mini-childbirth class. The second visit focused on the post-partum experience. She also offered to take our maternity photos at the nearby beach. We texted constantly throughout my third trimester. She always promptly responded. I had lots of Braxton Hicks contractions for two weeks leading up to my delivery. On the day of my labor, Emily was one of main reasons I was able to endure through 12 hours of labor naturally. I had a lot of pain in my due to the position of my baby. During the entire labor, Emily massaged my back. She literally was a personal masseuse for 12 hours! I actively pushed for about 45 minutes. Emily was able to document our birth and captured those very first moments with our baby. She also provided us with our birth story. At our post-partum visit 6 days after our son’s birth, she came to our house to take newborn photos and talk about my birth experience. Emily is an amazing doula and resource throughout our pregnancy, labor, and post-partum. You also get amazing photos! I highly recommend Emily Lovejoy as your doula!
My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Emily Lovejoy as our doula for the birth of our son in July 2016. She was absolutely wonderful and we highly recommend her to anyone expecting. The entire birth experience wouldn’t have been as smooth, quick, and pain medication-free without her. Emily met with us several times before the birth, initially at a coffee shop to decide if we wanted to work together, and later at our home to discuss labor strategies and techniques, review our birth plan, and answer questions. As a bonus, she also met up with us to do a family maternity photo shoot! Emily was always just a phone call or text away and she was terrific about answering questions that came up before delivery. I ended up being induced, so the delivery started much differently than expected, but Emily was unfazed and came by the hospital with a homemade smoothie for momma and eased our fears and helped make the hospital feel more welcoming. The following day she kept in touch throughout the day and when contractions began in earnest that evening she was there with her doula bag of tricks and an absolutely incredible attitude. She kept me, the laboring momma, calm and moving around. She was constantly encouraging me and working with my husband to keep him included. Emily ran interference with the nursing desk acting as our advocate with assertiveness and grace. She was a huge proponent for getting me into the bath to labor, which made a significant difference. She was absolutely incredible. She anticipated my needs before I even knew what I needed and she supported and encouraged my husband’s help. Emily has a kind, calm presence that is infectious. After my husband, baby, and I returned home, Emily stopped by to check on our little family to make sure all was well. She really is a treasure and we are grateful to have had her by our side for the birth of our son.
Emily was absolutely wonderful to have as our doula! She was very flexible and met us at the price we could afford, even though I feel like we got a whole lot more than what we paid for since she included some really fantastic photography. This was our first birth and both my husband and I were totally overwhelmed and nervous, but Emily provided us with so much information (without the pressure of feeling like it was homework) and she was really encouraging, calming, and prepared. During my labor, she was a lifesaver. My husband was there as my companion but even he needed a break through the 17-hour ordeal and Emily was right there, ready to help me breathe and relax. My husband and I can't thank her enough for all she did. I highly recommend Emily Lovejoy as a doula!
My husband and I feel incredibly fortunate to have met Emily and have had her assistance as a sibling, birth, and post-partum doula for the home birth of our baby girl.
During pregnancy Emily was extremely accessible and supportive; very knowledgeable and full of suggestions to help us. When I experienced back pain in my 3rd trimester that our midwife did not think could be helped, Emily proposed a yoga exercise that eliminated the pain. Her breadth of knowledge is impressive and likely a product of her work ethic and compassionate nature.
Leading up to the birth I dealt a lot with false labor; Emily was happy to come over even at the earliest stages, offering to time contractions and provide ideas to help move things along. When the big day arrived, my labor began at night and my son was asleep, meaning that, although she was prepared to support our son through the experience, we were lucky to have Emily support us. She arrived promptly after we called her, fully prepared with a bag of tricks including everything from massage gloves and aromatherapy to a peanut ball, and taught my husband some useful massage techniques to make contractions more manageable. As an added bonus, she also captured some special moments on camera at our request, which we will always treasure.
She came back again about 12 hours later and took our delighted son out to play, prepared dinner for us, and let us get much-needed sleep; the food was amazing and just what we needed. My 3-year-old son absolutely adores her. Her past experience as a teacher shows through the quality of their interactions.
At every stage, Emily's kind calm positive attitude was reassuring and contagious. Whether for pregnancy support, labor support, sibling support, or postpartum support, we simply cannot recommend Emily enough.
Emily was amazing as my birth doula!!! I absolutely could not have done it without her. I had a pain-med free, epidural free labor, which was hands down the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. And I can say with absolute certainty I would not have gotten through it without Emily. Not only was she a calming presence, but she also got along great with the nurses and hospital staff, which made things less stressful for me. When my contractions started getting tough, I was impressed to see that Emily was watching the monitor and knew exactly when I needed her. She is knowledgable, gentle, and strong. What I needed most during my labor was massage and hip pressure, and Emily knew exactly how much pressure to apply. She was great and I can't thank her enough!! I would highly recommend her!
Emily brings magic into your home!
In April 2014 my world became very different. Not only was I the mother of a 4 year old, I was a new mom of twins. A huge blessing I am thankful for evey, but the amount of work was overwhelming. We brought our new babies home from the NICU 9 days after I had an emergency c-section, and I was warned I needed to take it easy and not lift or overwork myself. That is not advice I truly understand, I am the type of do it all myself personality. However, physical limitations made me have to reevaluate my asking for help.
Emily came into my orbit and had the perfect balance to ease my stress and allow me to feel comfortable with the amazing help she offered. She was always calm, patient, and sincere with a caring spirit that enveloped me and my children. She took on any task so naturally that I did not notice the help right away, because she was talking to me and allowing me to feel at ease the entire time.
Emily's calm disposition allowed me to feel calm and trust her as she held one or both of my tiny babies that I had been through so much with already. This allowed me to step away for a moment and take care of myself and breath. When she was not on baby duty Emily would look around our apartment and see tasks that were in need of being done. She would wash a sink full of dishes or fold a basket of laundry without being asked, and yet managing to not be intrusive. She took time to truly listen and upon finding my eldest had a dairy allergy brought dairy free muffins for us to enjoy, and they tasted AMAZING!
When my husband would return home from work Emily would finish the task she had taken on and graciously wish us a good night. We would realize that for the evening we could sit a be our family of 5 without the laundry basket calling our names. This was magic and we are continually grateful to Emily for those moments.
We hired Emily to help us following the birth of our second child and she has been an absolute life saver. She is an incredibly sweet, caring and generous person that has always gone out of her way to help us with whatever needed to be done. She's been extremely gentle and patient with our 18 month old daughter - who has had to adjust to the new addition. She's come up with creative craft projects and has spent some great quality time with her ensuring she feels loved amidst the changes in our household. She's excellent with newborns and helped us with our premature daughter - who has had some difficulties with feeding. She is unphased by taking care of both children and keeps them both happy. I was very emotional following the birth and she paid special attention to me to ensure that I was getting enough rest and took on a great deal of housework to eleviate the workload on me. She has helped us on weekends and evenings and I can't remember a time that she didn't make herself available to us. I was always very impressed at how well she understood what I was going through and did a wonderful job supporting me and our entire family. When the time came to wean from breastfeeding she did research for me and helped me formulate a plan that was pain free. I can only say great things about working with Emily - I wish I had found her sooner than we did and would have hired her to work with us full time if she was not already working with another family. I hope to keep Emily involved with our family for a very long time!
Emily started taking care of our son from the time he was 3 months old. She is a wonderful caretaker -- gentle and safe with babies and always willing to help out with anything. She was great in looking up and learning about different things that would come up such as with feeding my baby or developmental milestones. She is a kind person with a great work ethic. She never was absent and was always willing to do extra work. Anyone who has Emily in their life is lucky :)
