Hillary was one of the best decisions we made for our pregnancy and birth. She is a wealth of knowledge (that's of course always evidence based) and that was like gold to us as first time parents. Her class was so helpful and helped us know that we had tools to utilize for a natural labor and birth. It also made it seem much less scary! We were thrilled to have Hillary in our birthing space to support us during a bit of an unexpected curve in our pregnancy. I called her worried the morning of my sons birth and she was there as soon as possible. Her presence and support in the room was much needed when I didn't think I could handle the pain any more. We talked about our options and she ultimately helped me have the birth I knew I wanted but knew she would support whatever decision we made. We are so thankful for her and look forward to her being at our births in the future!

Where do I begin?  After researching and listening to various birth podcasts, I knew it was important for me to have a Doula present at the birth of my first child.  Now, after experiencing the most empowering labor/birth I could have hoped for, I know it was not only important for us to have a Doula present, but to have Hillary present.  Hillary is well read on the entire birthing process, and has such a wealth of knowledge.  I truly could not imagine my husband and I not having her there to help guide us through the labor and birth of our son.  We walked the halls, used the birth ball, and counterpressure techniques Hillary taught us.  We were a true birthing team!

I have had Hillary with me for all three of my births. Without her I would have never known that I am the boss of my own birth! She was amazing, helping answer all, I mean ALL my questions, big or small. She is supportive emotionally and physically through out the whole experience. She is a fantastic resource and will help you any way she can! My last birth was mentally exhausting for me and she was by my side the entire time and I cannot imagine what it would have been like without her. If you're considering a doula at all, Hillary is the BEST of all time.

Emily Nurrenbern

Hillary is a wonderful doula! We've used her for the birth of both of our children and wouldn't change a thing. The knowledge and support that a doula like Hillary can bring are priceless. She is full of little tips and ideas that make the pregnancy, birth experience, and even the fourth trimester so much easier. She absolutely did not replace my dr or my husband, she enhanced my experience with them and worked along side them at my birth.

My second birth came very quickly on a night when the roads were a bit slick. Hillary was there even faster than expected and jumped right in, helping me get through each contraction and helping me focus on reducing tension and stress to lessen the pain. Although it was not my original intention to go without an epidural, the birth progressed too quickly to get one. I was so relieved to have Hillary's support that night and all of the knowledge she had given me ahead of time. Thanks to her, I knew to ask for nitrous oxide and some counter pressure to help relieve some pain. She made sure I was as prepared as possible and I will forever be grateful!

I felt like Hillary really made an effort to get to know me and my vision for my birth and did everything in her power to make it a positive experience. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone, regardless of a person's birth plans.

Hillary is INCREDIBLE!

When I found out I was pregnant I knew I wanted to hire a doula.  Having a "birth coach" just made sense to me. My husband planned to be 100% involved in the birth of our daughter, but he had no clue what to expect or how to support me.
Leading up to the birth, anytime I had questions or concerns she was there offering evidenced based articles and her wisdom.
She always left me feeling heard and supported.

During my 25 hour labor and 2 1/2 hour delivery at the hospital she was a true champion for my birthing experience!  Cheering me on, whispering encouraging words in my ear,  making sure all my requests were respected, being a calming presence, offering advice when it was needed and the list goes on...we couldn't imagine going through that experience  without her!!  My husband raved about how much she helped us!

She has a gift and she played a huge part in the wonderful memories we have bringing our daughter into this world!

For as long as I am near Hillary, if I am ever to have more kids, she will be my doula every time. She is incredibly good at what she does. Not only is it clear that she is very well educated and experienced on this matter, but she's also genuine and accomodating. She tries to make your pregnancy and birthing process as comfortable and enjoyable as she can. She gives her advice but also understands that this is your pregnancy and every decision revolves around what you want. She's great at informing you of all of your options regarding every aspect of your birth experience by giving you a handful of updated and professional resources. She will even go with you to your doctors appointments to make sure you understand everything your doctor is saying and clarify your options since that can get confusing sometimes. If ever I had a question or needed to talk she would call me as quickly as she could. She was my doula for my first ever birthing experience and I chose to go the whole natural route. This experience was painful and somewhat scary at certain points, but because she was there I genuinely felt safe. She guides you through the whole thing. There wasn't any moment that I didn't know what exactly it was that my body was doing, because she would put it into words which provides an extreme level of comfort during a very uncomfortable time. I now feel close to Hillary like a family member. If anyone is searching for a doula who knows what she's doing and provides you with a beautiful, comforting, and understanding vibe, Hillary is your woman.

Hillary was great to work with. She was very supportive of all my birth plans and helped me when I asked for advice. I have a large baby, 10 lb 10 oz, very long labor (34 hours), and Hillary was there through it all! It was so reassuring to have her there because I could ask her if she thought certain interventions were necessary at the moment. When I was in labor and exhausted, I couldn't make wise decisions. But I knew that if Hillary agreed that it was the right thing. She provided me with a lot of evidence based research on questions I had during pregnancy and it helped me have confidence in myself. I would recommend anyone to have a doula like Hillary!

My first birth was an unplanned cesarean. Despite how it progressed, I still wanted to believe I was capable of having the natural birth I desired. I researched for my second pregnancy before I was even pregnant. I found a new OB who supported my decision to VBAC and I found Hillary. She has since been an integral part of my two successful, med-free, VBACs. Her service, although I saw her as more of an important partner in our birth plan, was invaluable to myself and my husband.

When I was looking for a doula I knew I needed someone who could build my confidence. I wanted someone who was educated by evidence and could help present all options (pros/cons). I also desired a doula who was comfortable at the hospital I chose to deliver. Hillary filled this mold and so much more.

Throughout my pregnancies, Hillary always made herself available. If she was with her family, she still answered my calls. We regularly communicated via email/text. She was always able to answer any questions or just lend a supportive listening ear. She encouraged me and gave me the confidence to be the best advocate for myself and baby.

She went above and beyond ensuring my needs were met and exceeded my expectations during labor. When I could not advocate for myself, she knew my wishes and did so for us. She saw me through each contraction, offered the best verbal support, and always anticipated my needs before I even realized I needed anything. I trusted her during labor and relied on her comforting words to help me through.

If you’re on the fence about whether a doula is right for you, I could not recommend one more. If you’ve already decided you will welcome a doula into your birth plan, in my opinion, you will not find someone who is better educated, beyond dedicated, & more supportive of your wishes than Hillary. I cannot imagine having another birth story  without her in it.

Wow, where do I start? Hillary is an amazing doula! My husband and I felt blessed having her as a doula. She was our major source of knowledge and support for my labor and birth. My husband and I enjoyed every single private class with her. I was determined to have a natural birth and as first time parents we had no idea where to start. It did not take long until I felt confident that I could do it. I experienced prodromal labor on my second pregnancy. It was very frustrating. She gave me a lot of encouragement and assurance that took out a lot of my stress and I was able to enjoy the “waiting” moment.  I had a home birth and wanted to have a peaceful, calm labor and birth. With her professionalism, patience, and natural gentle disposition, she was a perfect part of the team! She gave me back massages, hip squeezes and was quick to suggest tips.  I loved her postpartum service, truly worth it. She helped me around the house and I got to go on a date with my husband knowing my babies are in good hands. Even my toddler loves her! We are forever grateful for an awesome team and I highly recommend her!

I was fortunate to have had Hillary as a doula for my 2nd and 3rd born children.  I felt having Hillary made all the difference.  For my first child, I had a c-section, and I wanted to shoot for a v-bac for my 2nd (and 3rd).  My 2nd and 3rd children were both induced and their (vaginal) deliveries were "fast and furious."  Hillary was knowledgeable and a calm presence.  Whereas my husband and I are relative novices in the child-birth arena, Hillary has virtually seen it all, and just knowing this was a comfort to us.  I felt we had an informed advocate in Hillary - someone who was up-to-date on research within the field.  She visited with us after the baby was born to check in, which was also comforting.  I generally feel all women should have this kind of support during labor and postpartum recovery.  Thanks Hillary!!

Mrs. Cavender

My husband and I hired Hillary to be our Doula when we were expecting our first child and it was well worth every penny!  Hillary was very knowledgeable in the labor and delivery options available to us and was a huge help when it came to preparing for the upcoming birth of our baby girl.

My husband and I can’t imagine what it would have been like if Hillary were not there during labor and delivery. She was there every step of the way, actively supporting both of us so that we could focus on each other and birthing a baby! Much stress was avoided by having her there.  Hillary has the heart of a servant and saint, and we can’t think of anyone that we would rather have supporting us for such an important piece of our family’s journey.

Sarah Wittenbraker

We hired Hillary when we were pregnant with our 2nd child. Our first ended in a c-section and I was determined to have a VBAC. Hillary was extremely knowledgeable and easy to work with. She is very personable and can get along with any personality type. She gave me the knowledge and confidence I needed to stand up for myself and my baby. I was able to advocate for my own care and even with an IUGR situation was able to go to 42 weeks in my pregnancy. She was so helpful during labor and my husband appreciated her being there as much as I did. I was able to get my VBAC and I attribute so much of that success to her.

Once I used her for the delivery of my 2nd child I knew I never wanted to experience labor and delivery without her. When I found out we were expecting #3 she was one of my first calls. I had her booked before my husband even knew I was pregnant. Again, she provided all the support I needed both during pregnancy and during labor and delivery. I was able to hold off getting an epidural until 8 cm mostly due to her helpful coping techniques and suggestions. Once I broke down and decided to get the epidural she was extremely supportive of that decision as well. We welcomed our 3rd child last Thursday...another successful VBAC!

We look forward to hiring Hillary again when baby #4 is on the way. There's just no way I'd ever want to do birth without Hillary ever again. She is worth every penny and has been such an integral part of our birth story.

Hillary came highly recommended by my OB when I told him that I would like to try for a natural birth for my first pregnancy.  Upon meeting her, I knew she would be a great asset in assisting and advocating for my husband and me when we were in an unfamiliar situation.  I’m actually a nurse but labor and delivery is so far from what I do, that I didn’t feel comfortable going it alone when it came to a natural birth.

We had a very long labor and Hillary was there for it all.  She helped me stay relaxed right through the end (after 22 hours).  My husband was even able to get in a couple of naps.  She has many comforting techniques and seems to know just the right time to offer them.  She taught me so much before, during, and after this whole experience.  I was totally comfortable with her and it was obvious that the medical staff was as well and that is so important!

After the birth, she even stayed around and chatted with my family, which was really nice.  It gave me some time to rest.  My husband and I both agree that Hillary was absolutely a necessity for our first birth. She will be for the next as well.

For my second birth, I chose to birth at home with a midwife and a doula. After interviewing with Hillary I felt that she was the best doula for me. She’s very knowledgeable and extremely dedicated to her clients! I was able to labor the way I wanted and she provided comfort when I needed it. She stayed after the birth to make sure we were settled in and she came back to visit, answer any questions I had, and talk about the birth experience. She went above and beyond what I expected of her and I highly recommend her!

Wow, where to begin!

1. Hilary knows her stuff.  Labor/delivery research articles are no stranger to her in her personal studies.

2. She also studies her clients, in a good way!  She will work hard to learn what YOU as a woman carrying, laboring for, and delivering a baby need & want.  At the start of my labor she worked hard to get to know my signs of an impending contraction and how to best serve and care for me.  It's not one size fits all for Hilary.  She is flexible and has a lot up her sleeve to offer women in their differing desires.

3. Hilary helped my husband help me.  She was good company for the long hours of labor.  Conversation between George and Hilary was a nice distraction for both me (who had the energy to listen but not talk) and George.  She taught him how to do hip squeezes- which are seriously the most magical natural pain relief during transition that you can imagine; I would go from agony to calm "thank you so much"'s coming out of my mouth.

4. She works her butt off. To be a good doula, you have to be pretty selfless.  Hilary consistently put my needs before her own.  She answered many texts/calls, always willing to help me think through my questions and/or concerns.  She came in early Monday morning to assist as my labor started.  She stuck with me for all 21 hours of labor and an hour after delivery.  She massaged my back, squeezed my hips, made sure my water bottle was near by, encouraged me when I was ready to give up, helped me remind myself why I chose not to go with an epidural, celebrated with me at the birth of our son, and so much more.  She never once complained, though I know she was exhausted.  She was gracious and generous and everything I could have asked for in a doula! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HILARY and hope she'll come to Indy for my next labor/delivery! ;)

Hillary and Abby worked with our family throughout the pregnancy and birth of our child in August 2017. While this was our third pregnancy, it was our first experience with a doula. I was hoping to achieve a VBA2C. After such poor support and upsetting delivery in my first VBAC attempt, I learned the profound impact a doula could have in my birth experience. We have always hoped for more children, but the birth of our second child left me feeling unsure about my physical and emotional tolerance to another birth. Prior to meeting Hillary and Abby, I had concerns about my ability to achieve a VBAC and what it meant for their services if I 'failed'. I quickly learned how wrong I was about this and how vital their role would be for me in this process. They were both so helpful in supporting my husband and I throughout the entire pregnancy, providing evidence based information when requested, and working with my Ob and I in the weeks leading up to delivery. Both were very accessible, supportive, and compassionate the entire time. Given all of the factors, we proceeded with a repeat scheduled cesarean at 41 weeks. Hillary was there to support us prior to delivery, immediately following, and in the days and weeks to come. With her support, we were not only confident we made the best decision for our family, but I was able to have a very healing birth experience. They were a joy to work with and a part of our family! I knew we made the right decision when I joyfully anticipated seeing her face at every meeting along the way. I would absolutely work with them for any future birth and recommend them to anyone considering doula services!

This was my second birth. When I met Hillary and Abby during my initial meetings, they were warm and comfortable to be around. They were knowledgeable about almost all topics of birthing and discussed and understood not only my birth plan, but also guided me on different topics during the last few weeks of my pregnancy. Hillary was on call when things started progressing and was guiding me on phone throughout the time I was home. She met up with me when I went to the hospital and stayed by my side the whole night till afternoon the next day. She provided guidance on different positions to help the labor going and listened to my concerns. She was involved throughout the labor helping me make informed decisions and discussing with the nurses my options. I felt very comfortable and safe having her by my side. She seemed to know exactly what I needed and when. She also helped my family and my husband feel comfortable by providing them updates during labor so they could get their work done when my labor was progessing slowly, which they really appreciated. I highly recommend having Hillary by your side during birth.

This was my second birth and second experience with The Doula Group of Evansville.  Last time, Hillary was the doula on call, and she was absolutely wonderful!  This time, Abby was the doula on call when I gave birth, and she was equally amazing!  My labor and delivery was very different this time around so I was thankful to have Abby on my team.  Before I knew that I was in labor, I was actually texting both Hillary and Abby with updates and questions.  They were both helpful and made me feel at easy.  My labor progressed quickly, and about an hour before I gave birth, my husband and I met up with Abby at the hospital.  As soon as Abby stepped into the room, she asked how I was, suggested/encouraged different positions, and massaged my back.  She was very soothing.  One of the nurses suggested that I try nitrous oxide.  Honestly, I hadn't looked into it before labor and didn't know much about it.  Abby was able to answer my questions about it and help me make an informed decision.  My labor was short, but even for that short time, Abby was very helpful.  I knew she had my back the whole time!  I highly suggest hiring The Doula Group of Evansville for your labor and delivery!

Hillary was a great asset to our birth! I wanted to achieve a VBAC and started to doubt myself near the end of my pregnancy. Hillary took us on and I'm so glad she did. She is a wealth of knowledge and she knew just how to help me during the toughest times during my labor and delivery. She gave us comfort knowing that the decisions we were making were the right ones. I don't think you could ask for a better doula!

Heather Harper

Hillary was with us for the unexpected loss of our son at 19 weeks due to a cord accident. She was helpful before the delivery in answering questions about what to expect and arranging comfort measures for us there. She stayed with us for the entire labor, delivery, and for several hours after. I was worried about having someone we didnt know well with us for such an intimate event, but she has a laidback way of being right there when you need her and retreating into the background when you need privacy. It was a terrible event to endure, but Hillary provided comfort, support, and encouragement to both me and my husband.

Daniela Johnston Houk

After a difficult first birth with complications from many interventions, I was determined to have an unmedicated birth for my second child. When my husband and I met with Hillary for the first time, she felt like an old friend. That was the deciding factor for us over and above her exemplary education or experience. Hillary supported me and my birth plan as if it was her own through less than ideal circumstances including a baby that waited longer than usual to turn head down, three and a half weeks of early labor, and more than one false alarm. I don’t think I could have stood up for my decision to continue past my due date without her support. Her skills brought physical comfort while her compassion comforted me through the fear of another hospital experience and frustration of a labor that did not progress as I thought it should. She encouraged me through some of the most difficult moments of my life and celebrated with me in one of the best. My only regret is that I didn’t have her for my first birth!

Emily Cooper

Hillary was my doula for the birth of our first child on November 3, 2014. Hillary met with my husband and I twice prior to the birth to assist us with a birth plan and educate us on what we would experience in labor and delivery. I carried my baby two week past the due date and Hillary was very supportive of me up until the baby's arrival, calling to check in on me and visitng me.

Having Hillary there during the birth put my husband and I at ease. She was able to assist me in comfort measures and be a great cheerleader. Her positive attitude and energy was wonderful to have during labor. I can say that my the birth of my daughter went just the way I wanted it to and Hillary was a big part in helping us achieve that.

Sunny Richardson

Hillary was invaluable to my birth experience. I had a fairly traumatic birth with my first son that ended in cesarean. During my second pregnancy I wanted to become more informed about my rights as a patient and as a mother giving birth. I stumbled upon ICAN, and there was linked to Hillary. Hillary is very kindhearted and makes you feel comfortable. She's very educated in childbirth. Her knowledge helped me through my VBAC attempt. Unfortunately, my second birth also ended in cesarean but through no fault of mine or Hillary's. She was with me for over 24 hours in labor. She gave me the emotional strength and support I needed to make it through my trying VBAC attempt. She poured every ounce of her energy into making me feel comfortable, yet empowered. I am so glad she was there and am forever grateful to have had her by my side supporting me. For anyone having a child first, second, third or beyond, I suggest you hire Hillary!

Robin Reeves Parker

I am so grateful that Hillary was present for the birth of my first child. I had planned for a natural childbirth in the hospital, which became complicated due to the fact that my son was asynclitic (head tilted to the side). Because of the length and difficulty this added to my labor I am positive I would not have been able to cope and stick to my birth plan for as long as I did without Hillary as my doula. Throughout the process she was by my side tirelessly with encouragement and support. She used a range of techniques such as aromatherapy, heat and positioning to help me feel as comfortable as possible, and she was also very good about helping my husband find ways that he could best assist me. She is very informed about the birth process and interfaced wonderfully with my medical team, which really created a positive environment for everyone. When my labor stalled after transition, Hillary helped me find different positions and movement to get my contractions going again without the pitocin that had been suggested. When I learned that due to my son’s positioning we would need to try an assisted birth (or face a C-section, which thankfully wasn’t necessary), having Hillary there to fully support the decisions I needed to make was encouraging and reassuring. When my son was taken to the special care nursery after his birth, Hillary stayed with me and kept me calm while my husband went with our baby. Thinking back on the experience I know that Hillary’s presence enabled me to navigate the challenges that came up in the best way that I could and to labor naturally for as long as possible. After everything was over my wonderful L&D nurse even commented about how great my doula was! Hillary truly was an amazing support and made a huge difference in my birth experience. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a doula.

I was having problems with my doctor (lack of supoort) and thought I needed extra support. That is when I went to Ican meeting and found Hillary. We hit it right off the bat, so I hired Hillary only 4 weeks before Aleister made his appears in the world. However, in those four week she made it to almost all my doctor appointment and my false labor lock-ups in the ER. Hillary even helped out with the gross task of making sure my urine sample made it back to the hospital. Hillary keep me positive though all the negative events that was happening at the end of my pregnancy and kept telling me I would have my Vbac. Unfortunately she was unable to make it the birth of my son, but with her knowledge she shared with me I rocked my Vbac. Once she got back into town, she come up to see how we was doing and was very pleased I did have my Vbac. Hillary Melchiors is an amazing person to have on your birth team, and I am so glad she was on mine.
