Ke’Xia was our postpartum night doula for 6 weeks, and I wish we could keep working with her forever!!! In addition to her thorough infant knowledge and professionalism, she brings an incredible calming warmth—new parent anxieties melt away when she is near! She started each night with a check in on my mental health as a new mom and also would assist in my healing, with relaxing sitz baths and discussions around shifting identities. She supported our son with such kindness and care, she felt like family! Once he could take a bottle, she did all night feedings and soothing, and would just wake me to pump. Before he was old enough for a bottle, she would bring him to me in bed to fed, then take care of soothing him back to sleep. She had great insight and suggestions, and answered any questions (no matter how “silly” or sleep deprived!). She is truly the best!!!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am truly sorry to hear that you felt unsupported during your birth. Birth is an incredibly vulnerable time, and every family deserves to feel cared for and safe.

While I cannot share private details of your labor or our communication, I do want to clarify that I followed the on-call policies and response guidelines outlined in the contract we both agreed to. I responded when notified, arrived once active labor and location were confirmed, and provided the support that was requested and consented to in the moment.

Because every birthing person’s needs and preferences shift during labor, the tools and comfort measures used vary from client to client and are always guided by the client’s communication and real-time requests.

I take all feedback seriously and remain committed to offering thoughtful, responsive, and heart-centered care to every family I serve. I am sorry that your experience did not feel aligned with what you hoped for, and I wish you and your growing family healing and peace.

I had a very disappointing experience with Ke'xia Draper, whom I hired as my birth doula.

In our agreement and during our introductory calls, she assured me that she would be fully on-call from 38–42 weeks and would provide continuous labor support. This included hands-on comfort measures, pain-management techniques, and in-person assistance throughout active labor. She also stated that she would arrive at my home or the hospital within 30 minutes of being notified.

However, on the day I went into labor, it became apparent that she was prioritizing another family in Oakland, who had hired her for postpartum care—despite her explicit assurance that birth clients would take full priority over postpartum clients during the on-call period.

The day before, I had informed her that I lost my mucus plug and asked her to be prepared. The next day, when my water broke, she did not respond to calls or texts for several hours.

When I was later admitted to the hospital and requested her support, she arrived approximately three hours after being contacted. She stayed for only about an hour and a half, during which she spent most of the time scrolling on her phone, which I found extremely distracting and unhelpful.

At 36 weeks, we had a 1.5-hour prenatal appointment where she showcased various tools and techniques she would use—massage and pressure methods, aromatherapy, a TENS unit, affirmation cards, and more. None of these were used during my labor.

Because of the lack of meaningful support, I labored largely on my own, and lost confidence in relying on her for the pushing stage. I decided not to call her back for pushing, as her presence felt more distracting than supportive at such an important moment.

Overall, this experience left me feeling unsupported during one of the most vulnerable times of my life.

My husband and I had a great experience with Ke'xia that set us up for a confident and connected pregnancy, birth, and early parenting experience. We met with several doulas before Ke'xia and were instantly drawn to her calm demeanor and grounded sense of humor. Ke'xia was a perfect fit for our birth team and really served as a great guide for these two first time parents.

Ke'xia really helped my husband and I prioritize and prepare for having our baby. She helped us work through our birth plan and decide how important it was to us to be able to connect and be present. Our family lives three hours+ away by plane, and it was fantastic to have someone there who'd "done it before". My husband is a planner by nature and wasn't sure how he'd do with a situation that felt so out of his control. Ke'xia's flexibility helped us to stay calm throughout a long labor.

My original plan had been to do position changes and shower to alleviate pain, but my contractions were too intense to stand or hold myself up. Ke'xia coached my husband as he guided me through breathing exercises and helped me to stay present. I really do believe that the positive, calm, and empowering environment Ke'xia created was what enabled me to push out a 9 lb 9 oz baby over four hours without distress from either me or the baby. Despite all the research I'd done, it somehow never occurred to me that this was a tough or long delivery. I simply felt that I was doing what I needed to do at my own pace.

In addition to the great birth experience, Ke'xia was also a fantastic resource for questions post-partum and during pregnancy. If/when I have a second baby I will absolutely seek out Ke'xia's services again.

Ke’xia was an instrumental part of my care team during and after my pregnancy. I was immediately drawn to her gentle and laid-back spirit, two qualities that helped ease my anxiety as a first-time mom. She was always prompt to offer support, and she made both myself and my partner feel much more confident in anticipation of baby’s arrival. Ke'xia was the first person I texted as soon as I went into labor; despite it being 3am, she immediately responded and walked me through what the next few hours would be like, how to time my contractions, and when I should go to the hospital.

Although she couldn’t physically attend the birth and sent a backup doula in her place (who was also incredible), I genuinely believe Ke’xia’s guidance empowered me to advocate for myself and my baby and have the birth story of my dreams: a vaginal, unmedicated birth (with the baby delivered in a squatting position, no less!). Even though she was technically just my birth doula, she continued to offer postpartum support over the next few weeks that was integral to my healing. I am forever grateful to Ke’xia and her affirming energy and will no doubt reach out to her again for any future pregnancies!
