Doula Lorr is incredible!!! I am so grateful to have had her as a doula and for her ongoing support and friendship. We were lucky enough to be recommended to Lorr by another doula. We got to meet with her in our second trimester and from then on were in frequent communication. Lorr made herself available to us whenever we had questions or concerns and was very informative and reassuring. She really focused on empowering me and encouraging me to trust my own instincts and intuition. She also always provided plenty of background information so I felt like I had the knowledge I needed to to make the best choices for me and our baby. Due to covid restrictions, Lorr was not able to be physically present at our birth. However, she was available for us and guided us up until we were at the hospital. After our birth, Lorr provided (and continues to provide!) incredible postpartum care. She came over and watched our little one so my husband and I could rest and spend time with one another. She helped answer my many, many newborn questions. And, she was a strong, loving force on the tougher newborn days. I feel lucky to count Lorr as a friend to this day. She checks in on us and our little one and feels like a member of our family. I could not recommend her highly enough.
Someoned described her best- a real life fairy godmother- but extremely badass. I connected with Lorr within the first few minutes of speaking with her.
I worried what doula support would look in the time of a pandemic when I could not even speak to her in person. I learned it did not matter. Her voice alone is so calming. Having Lorr right beside us through the last days of pregnancy and the birth of my baby girl is something I will forever be grateful for.
Things got worrisome when I did not go into labor by the due date, and the doctors wanted to induce because of Gestational Diabetes. Every day was difficult to get through mentally as my fears mounted. But every day I would confide in Lorr, twice if not thrice, over the phone. She would bring me back to the present, remind me that my baby and I were ok, and to trust my intuition.
Lorr's presence during my first scheduled induction gave me confidence to voice my honest opinion to the doctor, who let me go home and reschedule the induction a few days later.
On the day of the induction, Lorr was with us patiently all the way from when I got admitted to when I gave birth, almost 16 hours later. While they gradually increased my pitocin dose, she told my husband and I stories about other births she had attended, and about her own life. As my contractions got stronger, and more painful she was right there, reminding me to breathe, helping make sure I did not trip over things, little things that make the biggest difference when you're in pain.
I remember looking at her and telling her towards the very end that I did not think I could do it anymore, and she reassuringly looked at me and told me we were almost there. It is thanks to her I did not opt for an epidural, and pushed through.
Lorr has become a friend and someone I can't wait to tell my daughter about when she wants to know her birth story.
My name is Mary and I gave birth to a beautiful little 6lb. 14oz boy on September 6th, 2018. It was such an amazing experience! During the pregnancy, we were deciding between different options. In the middle of August, we met with and hired Lorraine Lorr to be our Doula. It was such a good decision! She was so supportive for the rest of our pregnancy (due 9/2/18). Any questions, thoughts or concerns we had, she was right there to support and answer them.
On September 5th I went into labor. Lorraine was there to support us through the whole thing. During the contractions, she really helped my husband to support me in the perfect way. I gave birth naturally to my son Michael at 3:18am and could not be more happy with the whole experience. It was so good to have a grounded, calm doula there with us. I vividly remember one of the contractions when she silently brought me a little cup of water and held it to the side for the right amount of time and then would bring it into view so I could take some if I wanted to. Just her understanding of my altered state of mind was beautiful. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a wonderful support for their birth experience!!
Lorraine's postpartum support was wonderful as well! There for our questions and just overall help!
I used Lorraine Lorr as a post-partum night shift doula, and she was a life-saver. In fact, she's more than a life-saver. She provides critical support during the hardest time of child-rearing (not to mention warmth and good humor), but she also is a keen observer and wise counselor.
First, the post-partum doula work: Lorraine Lorr is extremely dependable-- always arrives early and often willing to stay late if something important happens at the end of her shift (like, you know-- deep sleep!) I was in a difficult situation and needed a lot of help, so I asked Lorraine to come for three night shifts a week for a few months. She would arrive around 10:45 for an 11:00 p.m. shift start and stay until about 7:00. These were the nights I got the best sleep. Lorraine watched my baby in a separate room and would bring the baby to my breast when it was feeding time. Although I woke up, I was able to fall asleep again while the baby nursed knowing that Lorraine was in the room ready to help when I needed it.
Lorr's fees were easily earned by the extra sleep I got on the nights she came, but her services extended well beyond that. When I was having trouble digesting all the varied advice or finding a good instructional video, she always had a great resource for me. And she was in many ways an extra parent, noticing patterns or subtle cues in my baby to help me minimize distress during collicky times and to change routines as the baby's needs and preferences shifted.
Lorr is also really cool-- a sweet, hippie auntie. She is evidence-based and down-to-earth. She has great respect for the values and desires of her clients. She really takes on her client's goals and does incredible work to help her client achieve them, even when the goals or philosophies of the parents change over time. I highly recommend her!
Lorraine was my birth doula with my second child a few years ago. Initially I did not want a doula. I didn't think I needed one, since I had given birth before and my husband was there. Looking back I am glad and grateful we had Lorraine as our doula. She offered physical & emotional support during the last few months of my pregnancy.
Once in labor and at the Birth Center, she was present the entire time in her own calm way....I did not want anyone but my husband near me, or touching me. Lorraine respected that in her own special way, and offered support by just being there. It was comforting. Once our son was born, Lorraine again very gently and calmly offered emotional support. She made us tea and brought nacks to us while we were cuddling with our son in bed. I clearly remember had forgotten to brings socks and my feet were freezing after giving birth. Lorraine had extra socks in her doula bag, which she put on my cold feet. Very sweet woman. Very experienced and calm. You can not go wrong if you have Lorraine by your side. She is incredible.
Lorraine was more than I could have ever hoped for in a doula. She was so real, supportive, and caring throughout my entire pregnancy. When it came time to have our baby, things did not go as planned and actually ended up being pretty scary and traumatic. When Lorrain entered the room, a sense of calm and releif came with her. When I was wheeled off for my emergency cesarean, by partner could not come. I am forever grateful that she was there for him through what was probably the longest half hour of his life. I not only had great support from her throughout my pregnancy and one of the toughest times of my life, but I also gained a life long friend.
When I first learned about doulas, I immediately knew this was something I would want when my time came. Being a first time mother, there were many unknowns. Having Lorraine as a resource for knowledge and support from beginning to end was a blessing. You can find anything you ever need to know about anything on the Internet, but being able to sit, and talk things through with someone as experienced as Lorraine brought me calm and comfort. She is flexible and never forceful. She shares what she thinks you may find beneficial and gently suggests things when you need guidance. When I was in labor, she was there when I needed her and always close by when I didn't. I was very connected to my husband while in labor and she never made any attempt to interject. She knew what I needed, which was my husband, and was right there if I needed anything else. I'm grateful that she was present on the most important day of my life and she will always hold a special place in my heart because of it.
If you're considering a doula, I highly recommend it. If you're looking for someone who's grounded, loving, soft, flexible, and in the moment, I recommend Doula Lorr.
I feel lucky to have had Doula Lorr assist my husband and me in births of both of our children. I first contacted her a week before my daughter was due when we realized that it was almost “go time” and we hadn’t taken the time to fully prepare ourselves for our birth-center birth. Lorr kindly agreed to work with us and met with us several times to help us practice pain management techniques while gently guiding my husband on how to do these techniques as well. Once labor kicked in, Lorr met us at the birth center and was an invaluable resource, providing counter-pressure to my hips, suggesting alternative positions, and even making snacks! Our daughter was born beautifully and drug-free with many thanks to Lorr’s assistance. A year and a half later, when we found out we were expecting our second child, we didn’t hesitate to contact Lorr again. She again met with us several times, discussed what our anticipated needs would be since we knew a little bit more what to expect, and we worked out our plans for another birth-center birth. Unfortunately for me, I developed a slow water leak and when I didn’t go into full labor after several days, my midwives decided I needed to be admitted to the hospital to kick start labor with a light dose of pitocin. Even in the hospital setting, Lorr proved to be very helpful in assisting me to maintain as natural of a birth as possible. She provided massage, suggested positions to move the baby down, and helped to keep things in the room as “low key” as possible. After just a few hours, my son was born without the need for any pain medications despite the pitocin and being a “large baby” (9lb 10oz). Lorr is an excellent doula who works with the couple to find out what their needs are and what role would be most useful to the couple. I highly recommend her services.
