Relevant volunteer or advocacy work

I was a UW Volunteer Birth Doula when the program was running in 2016. I have attended many trainings regarding childbirth, all through the Simkin Center: Birth Doula Training, Postpartum Doula Training, Childbirth Educator training, and When Survivors Give Birth. In addition to these trainings I have also attended a Trauma, Mindfulness, and Childbirth Seminar, and an Infant Mental Health Workshop. I have helped develop and begin a PEPs group for teenaged mothers at an alternative high school, bringing the program to young mothers. I worked for nearly two years at a transitional living shelter for pregnant or parenting teen mothers. There I’ve helped develop and implemented many programmatic services to further support and honor the childbirth and postpartum experiences of the mothers there. I am experienced in recognizing signs of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, supporting mothers through that time and experience, and referring out to other professionals as needed.

My wife and I had twins and realized after bringing our first child home that we would need a lot more help than we planned on. We reached out to NAPS and Laura was one of the referrals we received. She returned our message right away and was able to come out and help us that very night. We got along well with Laura and we worked with her as a key part of our doula support team (we worked with multiple doulas in that '4th trimester'). Besides being friendly and someone who obviously loves kids and is good with them, she is clearly engaged with her vocation and also shared her knowledge with us, which was a big help to us. As a postpartum doula, she also regularly checked in with us as parents and, based on our conversations, did research to find other resources we could use and offered ideas on helping us cope with our changing life. We were looking for someone that we could trust to take care of our girls, someone who would be able and willing to share knowledge on caring for babies to help us learn and someone who would provide all-around help that would allow us to get some rest. Laura delivered on all of these. She was always willing and eager to help with the other little things (washing bottles, making formula, setting up to pump, laundry - when the babies were resting) that it made it a lot easier for us to be able get some sleep and rest. She also worked with our other overnight doulas to coordinate and keep a schedule of who was working when so that we knew when we would have support and who would be there. She also took the initiative to help us organize things to make it easier to track all the bottles of breast milk and formula without getting confused. And on the few occasions where Laura was not able to work as planned, she made sure we had backup care. We were very happy with Laura and I would recommend her to anyone looking for a postpartum doula.

We had Laura help for one night while we were sleep training our 8 week old just to provide some relief. Laura was great at following our guidance in terms of how to approach sleep training (we chose a very gentle method) and took meticulous notes that was really helpful for us as we continued sleep training. She also included some suggestions from her own experience based on her observations that night, which we found really helpful. She managed to convince our baby girl to sleep for a 4 hour stretch... something she has yet to repeat for us! We’d hapoily hire Laura again for future nights when we need

Laura provided both mental and emotional support to both me and my husband throughout my pregnancy. She helped answer any questions we had about the birth process and and provided us with tons of resources about whatever we wanted further information on. She prioritized how we wanted our birth experience to be and respected our birth preferences.

When it came to the big day I couldn't have asked for better support and care. Laura was helpful and supportive every step of the way and helped make my birth experience feel empowering. I truly think having Laura as my doula was the best decision we made throughout my entire pregnancy.

Laura helped me & my husband for the first two weeks after I had my first baby. I was desperate for some sleep after struggling through some sleepless nights. I was so grateful when I found someone who could help two nights a week. laura was able to provide support on questions, she also helped out with our laundry, dishes and of course taking care of Kate.

i highly recommend Laura!

My husband and I hired Laura right after the birth of our baby girl. We were completely exhausted from being up around the clock taking care of our newborn. She's brought us MUCH relief with nighttime newborn care a few times a week. We're now getting the rest that we need and are able to keep going! What I've loved the most about Laura, besides us getting sleep with our newborn, is how flexible she is with her care taking. She wanted to do things our way. She was happy to bring the baby to me if I wanted to breastfeed through the night, or give her breastmilk or formula from a bottle while we sleep. Laura was incredibly non-judgemental on how we wanted to do things and we've also learned a lot from her excellent caretaking skills as well. Lastly, we've really apprecaited the extra help she's given us around the house at night when our baby girl is sleeping. When Laura comes, it's a good day! Thank you Laura! We absolutely love having your help during this time of adjustment in our family's life. We count the days to when you come back. :)

I’ve known Laura for 16 years and have been honored to call her one of my best friends. She is extremely caring and a joy to be around! Not only is she very trustworthy and reliable, but she is also amazing with kids. I have watched her interact with kids of all ages, especially babies and toddlers, and she knows how to keep them comfortable and having fun. I personally don’t have kids yet but I plan on working with her to take advantage of her wonderful expertise in childcare and knowledge in childbirth. If you’re looking for an excellent doula, look no further! You can definitely count on Laura ;)

Laura helped me with my newborn son and juggling my three year old after he was born. She was supportive and encouraging and it is very clear that she is educated, calm, and enjoys the work that she does. What I was the most impressed with was her patience, and how she tries to make everything a learning experience for kids of all ages. She kept my 3 year old engaged, which allowed me to get some quiet time. Laura was also attentive and perceptive to the needs of my newborn. It was always a sigh of relief when Laura got here!
