When I had my first son, I didn't think I needed to invest in a doula. I had done tons of research and took hypnobirthing courses with my husband, and really felt like I could handle birth without one. While I didn't have a negative experience per se, it was not what I had prepared for at all, and I spent the next few years wondering how things would have been different if I had the support of a doula.
When I found out I was pregnant again, I reached out to MaryBeth right away. My husband and I knew I needed her support, and I had only met her once just a month before. Without knowing much about her, I knew I trusted her. She has a calm but sure presence, and I felt comfortable with her right away.
While I had a healthy pregnancy, I did have a handful of anxiety provoking moments, and MaryBeth was always available to talk me through my concerns. She validated every concern, no matter how minor.
When I got to the hospital in labor, I had an exceptionally hard time seeing eye to eye with my provider. MaryBeth very quickly stepped in and was ready to advocate for me and my wishes, and talk things through with me so I didn't make any rushed, pressured decisions. She worked with my nurses to ensure I got the experience I was looking for, in spite of my difficult doctor. She helped in ways that my husband never would have been able to on his own. In the end, I had a perfectly healthy labor and birth, with no health issues at all, and I gained an incredible sense of calm about the whole experience. Had I not had my doula, I would have had some serious birth trauma from the way my doctor handled things. I am forever grateful for MaryBeth.
I don't plan on having anymore children, but if I did I would hire MaryBeth every time.
