When my wife suggested that we contact Allison to discuss her assistance in the upcoming birth of our son, I had never before heard of a doula and had no idea what her function would be. The closest correlation that I could make was to that of a midwife, and having already found an ob/gyn that we were quite comfortable with to deliver our baby, I failed to see the need for the assistance of this strange, unfamiliar "doula" that she spoke of.
I agreed to a meeting with Allison, fully expecting to come away with affirmation of my misgivings. However, during the course of that first meeting, I became a believer. We acquired her services immediately.
She became, and remains, an integral part of our family. Including her in the extraordinary event of the birth of our son Reed turned out to be one of the best decisions that we have ever made.
