Training offered
Tiny Kicks, Big Dreams provides practical continuing education for doulas and perinatal professionals who want to support client advocacy without overstepping scope. Courses focus on calm communication, informed consent support, trauma-informed care, client autonomy, documentation, professional boundaries, and scope-aware advocacy in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum settings. Current and upcoming trainings include: • Advocacy Without Overstepping — communication strategies for supporting client voice, asking better questions, navigating provider conversations, and staying within scope. • Trauma-Informed Communication in Maternity Care — practical strategies for communicating in ways that support safety, dignity, autonomy, informed consent, and emotional safety during routine, unexpected, painful, or urgent care. Trainings are designed for birth doulas, postpartum doulas, childbirth educators, patient advocates, and other perinatal professionals who want clear, usable tools they can apply in real client-care situations. Courses are self-paced and include video instruction, downloadable workbooks, reflection/application activities, post-course evaluation, and a certificate of completion when requirements are met. Approved contact-hour information is listed with each course.
Summary of qualifications
Kelly Miller, PhD, MPH, CHES, BCPA, is a health educator, patient advocate, speaker, author, and founder of Tiny Kicks, Big Dreams. She develops practical education for doulas and perinatal professionals focused on communication, informed consent support, trauma-informed care, client autonomy, and scope-aware advocacy. In addition to her formal education, Kelly is a Certified Health Education Specialist and a Board Certified Patient Advocate. Her background combines public health, health education, patient advocacy, and perinatal support, giving her a unique perspective on how communication affects safety, trust, dignity, and decision-making in maternity care. Through Tiny Kicks, Big Dreams, Kelly teaches professionals how to support clients without speaking for them, overstepping their role, or escalating tension in the care environment. Her trainings emphasize clear language, respectful communication, professional boundaries, documentation, and practical tools that can be used in real pregnancy, birth, and postpartum situations. Kelly is also the author of The Calm Birth Advocate and speaks on advocacy, communication, and helping people find their voice in moments that matter.
Style of teaching
My teaching style is practical, calm, and grounded in real-life care situations. I believe professionals need more than theory; they need language, structure, and decision-making tools they can actually use when a client is overwhelmed, a conversation gets tense, or the plan changes quickly. My work grew out of a deep interest in health education, patient advocacy, and the moments when people struggle to find their voice in healthcare settings. In maternity care, those moments can feel especially vulnerable. A mother may be in pain, exposed, frightened, uncertain, or trying to process information while everyone around her seems to be moving quickly. The words used in those moments matter. I teach advocacy as a skill, not a personality trait. You do not have to be aggressive to be effective, and you do not have to have all the answers to be useful. Strong support often begins with slowing the moment, asking a clearer question, protecting the client’s autonomy, and knowing where your role begins and ends. My courses are designed to help doulas and perinatal professionals support clients without speaking for them, interpreting clinical information outside their scope, or escalating tension in the room. I focus on plain language, informed consent support, trauma-informed communication, professional boundaries, and respectful collaboration with care teams. My goal is for learners to leave with something they can use immediately: a phrase, a framework, a better question, or a calmer way to respond when the moment feels high-stakes.
