Our Foundational Birth Doula Training offers a comprehensive blend of self-paced and instructor-led learning designed to prepare participants for confident, compassionate work in birth support. The program begins with online preparation, continues with two immersive days of in-person training in Vancouver, BC, and concludes with six weeks of guided online classes. Participants gain a solid grounding in the physiology of birth, comfort measures, medical interventions, postpartum recovery, and the practical and ethical foundations of doula practice. We emphasize both knowledge and presence—helping future doulas understand not only what to do, but how to be with families during birth and the early postpartum period. Training includes opportunities to practice communication and advocacy skills, role-play real-life scenarios, and build community with others who share a passion for reproductive care. Our approach integrates evidence-based education with reflective, inclusive, and trauma-informed teaching methods. For those who wish to continue their growth, we offer an optional one-year 1:1 Mentorship Program, providing individualized guidance in business development, professional identity, and client care as you establish your doula practice. Certification through our program is also available but not required.

Summary of qualifications

Bloom has been a trusted name in birth work since the early 2000s, built on years of hands-on experience and dedication to supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. Led by Morag Hastings, an experienced birth doula and photographer based in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, BC, Bloom has supported over 500 births and has been teaching and mentoring doulas since 2015. Morag brings a practical, real-world approach to her teaching, shaped by many years of attending births and guiding new doulas. Her classes focus on building confidence, developing strong support skills, and understanding both the emotional and physical aspects of birth. Recognizing the need for high-quality, in-person training, Bloom created the Foundational Birth Doula Training to give aspiring doulas the skills, knowledge, and encouragement they need to start their own practice. The program combines online preparation, hands-on workshops, and ongoing mentorship to help students grow into capable, confident professionals. Graduates of Bloom’s training leave with a solid foundation in doula work, practical tools they can use right away, and a clear understanding of how to begin their journey in this rewarding field.

Style of teaching

My approach to doula education is rooted in over a decade of hands-on experience and a deep respect for the power of birth. I believe that effective doula work comes from a solid foundation of knowledge, practical skills, and the ability to offer calm, compassionate support. My teaching combines evidence-based information with real-world experience from years of attending births and mentoring new doulas. Since 2015, I have been training and supporting doulas through classes, mentorship, and community education. My goal is to help each student build confidence — not just in how they support families, but in how they establish and sustain a successful doula practice. Alongside birth and postpartum education, I place a strong focus on business development, including marketing, interviewing, client communication, and managing a professional practice. Learning in my classes is hands-on and interactive, with time for discussion, skill-building, and reflection. I aim to create a learning environment that is welcoming, practical, and focused on growth. Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and learn from experience, leaving with both the confidence and the tools needed to begin their work right away. Ultimately, my focus is on preparing doulas who are capable, confident, and grounded — practitioners who can support families with skill and compassion while also running sustainable, thriving businesses that reflect their values and strengths.
