One of the most important decisions for a successful birth is honing in on who you want on your birth team. For my husband and I, finding a doula was an essential part of ensuring we had the support we needed for a natural labor and delivery. After hearing close friends of ours rave about Kelly, we decided to meet with her as we prepared for our second child's birth. Upon meeting, three things stood out right away.
First, Kelly has a peaceful and grounded presence that brings such calm to a given room. I felt like I was able to relax, and rest, with her both in our meetings and in labor.
Second, this peace-giving spirit was not, however, the result of a passive or stoic personality. Quite the opposite. I knew I wanted someone who would play an active role supporting and guiding me through labor, and Kelly exhibited a strong and unwavering presence. She endured without distraction through the long hours of labor, and also did not hesitate to jump in and offer suggestions or ideas (such as encouraging me to drink honey tea for strength as I prepared to push--something I would not have thought I wanted, but loved once I began drinking it).
Third, Kelly is deepy knowledgeable about all aspects of pregnancy, labor, and delivery. She met with us multiple times to discuss breathing patterns for labor, to review how labor works, and ensure we had all our questions answered.
As you consider doula's, I could not recommend Kelly more highly. During labor, she partnered effortlessly with my husband to provide pain-relaxing counter pressure and guide me through each stage. She sat with me after birth and ensured I had the food and drink I needed while I breastfed my daughter. She has also continued to check in postpartum to ensure that we were doing well. Outside of labor, she is also a talented photographer and took the best family photos of us. Our family and friends still rave about how well they turned out!
