We met with Laurie early in my pregnancy and immediately felt like she would guide us through the process in a way that balanced respecting our hopes for the birthing plan with our areas of ignorance (since it was our first birth, we had a lot of gaps in our knowledge). Laurie came over twice before our hospital birth and helped us organize our priorities. During these meetings, we felt like she wanted to get to know us as individuals and as a couple; it felt like she had all the time in the world for us and wanted to make sure we felt like we had a partner throughout the whole experience - viewing us as complete individual people, not just as a couple about to have a baby.
During the birth itself, Laurie's presence brought a sense of joyful calm to the room, which is exactly the mood that we were hoping for our baby to be born into. Laurie didn't leave my side, she kept me present and partnered well with the midwife and nurse seamlessly to ensure a positive delivery. She helped support me in the moment decisions I had to make, ensuring that my partner and I knew what options we had. There was a minor complication with the baby after delivery, and Laurie held my hand the entire time the baby was getting their needs met, reassuring me that everything was going to be fine (it was), which freed up my partner to be able to check in on the baby.
Finally, after the delivery, she checked in multiple times to see how my partner and I were transitioning into parenthood - again, grounding us in the moment. Also, her postpartum massage felt truly like a bonus gift. Even now that we are on the other side of her contractual support, we feel like we have a resource for life.
I wholeheartedly recommend having Laurie as your Doula!
