“How does anyone expect to have a baby without her?” My husband said after Heather left our house after our initial meet and greet visit. And, from experience, no one should try to have a baby without her.
My husband and I aren’t the “woo woo” types. He’d never heard of a doula, I had and wondered whether it was something I wanted or needed but hadn’t really dug deep on it. Heather came as a recommendation from a long time mutual friend. Someone I ran into by fluke at 4months pregnant and whose chance encounter changed the course of the rest of my pregnancy and the birth of our daughter.
Turns out after wondering about it for a while, I really needed a doula, and so did my husband. Heather was like our coach and our teammate at the same time. I’ve had many therapists and mentors in my life but nothing like this. Heather is like the world’s best psychologist who is also your friend, temporary mother, massage therapist, comic relief specialist, your birthing partner’s pal, and your baby’s first coach too. She’s amazing and there’s no other word for it.
I had a long, frustrating labour filled with many unexpected challenges and I simply don’t know how I would have handled it without Heather there. She’s the ultimate pro, navigating the hospital and hospital staff with a grace an appreciation that not all doula’s employ, and she effortlessly makes everyone around her feel like they’re on the same team going in the same direction. She single handedly changed my attitude and the course of bringing my baby into the world and she’s someone I will forever be grateful for and uniquely bonded with. If you have a chance to have Heather along side one of the biggest days of your life, you (and your family) will be forever changed too.
Because yea, no one should have a baby without her.
