I knew I wanted to work with a doula even before I became pregnant. Once I became pregnant I set off to find a group that matched my needs and outlook. Northern Star Doula was the perfect match. I felt comforted by the approach they take on supporting my specific needs and wants. From my very first phone call and into my postpartum period I was supported with resources, information, check ins, and people who genuinely care.
I was matched with Emma as my doula. She jumped right in to make sure I had what I needed and wanted. She provided me with the resources I asked for and offered ideas in areas that were aligned with what I was looking for but outside of my knowledge base.
My main concern was that I was going to be pushed into something during delivery that I didn’t want to do and didn’t have enough of an understanding of to make an informed decision about. Emma gave me space to express my concerns and helped me understand potential situations that could come up. She assured me that she would always be there to help me take time to think through what the doctors were saying. She also provided me with resources and information to practice in preparation for delivery which aligned with the ideal birth situation from my perspective.
When the day came, nothing went as I had hoped. I learned from Emma to keep an open mind. I had a few medical complications, but through it all Emma was by my side, ensuring I had time to ask questions and understand all that was happening to me. The nurse that was with us during my labor was more old school and hard lined. I was intimidated! But Emma was not. She spoke up to make sure that I had time to process and understand everything, and she made it okay for me to move forward with the things that I wanted. This is exactly what I wanted and expected in my doula, and I felt so supported and cared for. I am so grateful to have had Emma by my side during this journey.
