When I mentioned wanting a doula my husband was skeptical of what one would provide, but after giving birth he said having Barbie was the best decision we made. Barbie played a dynamic role throughout pregnancy, delivery and beyond. From the first conversation, it was clear that Barbie had a kind, understanding and supportive demeanor. The weekly contact with updates on baby's growth and opportunities to prepare for birth was something I looked forward to. When Barbie came to our home, she provided handouts and discussed options with my husband and I. I especially loved that she never tried to convince us of anything or alter our views, she simply provided us with information allowing us to determine what is best for our family.
Barbie took our wishes and created a birth plan for us to have on hand when the time came. Barbie had sent a message to remind me that she was available any time in my last two weeks and to contact her when anything happened. When the time came, it felt a bit unnatural to call someone twice in the middle of the night, but each time Barbie answered as if it was a normal midmorning. She listened to my symptoms and was able to help us identify the stage I was in and if it was time to go to the hospital. Our last call was around 2:45 am. Unbenowst to any of us, I progressed quickly and was on the way to the hospital in a precipitous labor at 4am. Barbie must have already been dressed because she arrived shortly after us. Although my labor was short, Barbie's presence was profound. It was great to have someone we knew and trusted along side us. There was no nurse that was familar with the alternative birthing center, but Barbie knew where everything was. She handed my midwife warm compresses as I pushed, she assisted me in adjusting positions and ulitmately delivering our beautiful baby girl. I will definitely reach out to Barbie again when it is time to welcome our next child.
