Rachel's range of experience, flexibility, and the ease of our first conversation drew me to working with her. While I hoped for an out-of-hospital birth, I knew I needed to keep an open mind around the unpredictability of pregnancy, especially considering my gestational diabetes. Rachel helped me uphold this open mindset while also supporting my ultimate hopes and goals. We had productive in-person meetings where we talked logistics and built a rapport, and in between our meetings Rachel stayed in contact, checking in by phone and sending helpful recommendations for pregnancy products, meditations, and other support.
When it came time for the birth itself, my hopes for low intervention had rapidly shifted to require an in-hospital induction and high medical involvement. Rachel was at my side the whole way, sharing my disappointments while embracing that this was ultimately what my baby needed most. She ensured my comfort and advocation throughout the process, suggesting helpful position changes and communicating with nurses when a sudden infection made my own communication rather hazy (and never complained as I surely cut off the circulation in her poor hands from squeezing them!). When my baby finally arrived, Rachel took gorgeous photos of our first moments, and stayed to support us for those initial hours through our transfer to the postpartum room. With Rachel, I felt secure and supported through the most unpredictable days of my life, and I would highly recommend her to any searching for a wonderful doula.
