We hired Beth as a doula for our 4th child. It was our 2nd hosptial birth, and I was concerned that it would be more difficult for me to labor without interventions in the hospital vs in the birthing center where I'd had babies 2&3.
I was also particularly concerned about my baby coming out faceup (2/3 of my older children had come out this way). Beth is very knowledgeable about the anatomy of the pelvis and gave me advice for trying to get baby in the optimal position throughout pregnancy.
The prenatal visit was especially helpful. Beth taught my husband and I several stretches and exercises to help my body prep for labor. She also discussed in depth my birthing preferences.
In the week or two leading up to birth I was in contact with her via text when I experienced contractions. Despite it being my 4th baby, it was still quite helpful having someone with much more birth experience to talk to.
When it was time to head for the hospital, we had Beth meet us there after we got settled. She was prompt and prepared.
During my labor, Beth asked about where the pain was and had me adjust positions accordingly to help baby move through the pelvis. Based on what we'd discussed at our meeting she also reminded me to un-tense my body and to breathe with my whole body to help baby move. She was also able to advise my husband on ways to physically support me during the contractions.
It was very helpful for both of us to have a non-related support person who was there solely to help us.
Beth stayed for about the first hour afterward.
Postpartum, she came over for a followup visit at our home to discuss how things had gone.
We are so, so grateful for the support she provided us before and during labor. We regret not hiring a doula for any of our other births! If we have another child, we will definitely be hiring Beth again.
