When we first contacted Lu, we weren’t exactly sure what to look for in a doula. As immigrants, our biggest fear was not understanding how the healthcare system handled childbirth in Canada. We needed someone who could advocate for our family and was informed about the available options. After one consultation with Lu, we realized she was the right choice.
She provided us with valuable knowledge during the pregnancy, teaching us about the stages of labor, breastfeeding, and newborn care. Massages were even part of the classes. Lu left us with supportive materials and was always available to answer our questions. She welcomed our family, allowing our parents to participate in the classes.
On the day of the birth, I waited to call her because I felt prepared by her teachings and was able to stay calm. When labor intensified, we called her, and she arrived promptly. I will never forget her care, her calm voice guiding and encouraging me. I managed to stay at home until I was 7/8 cm dilated, and within an hour, my daughter was in my arms.
I have vivid memories of Lu pouring water on my belly while I was in the bathtub, offering me water after the birth, and making visits with the same care she showed during the first ones. A newborn needs to feel safe and nurtured, and I can say that a pregnant woman needs the same. I found all of this in Lu.
