Britney was an incredible mentor, counselor, and helper throughout the childbirth process. Before the birth, she provided resources to help us prepare for labor. During the labor she checked in frequently and orchestrated smooth handoff to other doulas that she knows and trusts when she had other obligations. Her colleague Katie got us through the most difficult portion of the labor (~5 hours of active labor before the epideural) with special yoga poses for repositioning the baby and lots of comforting techniques such as rocking and vocalizing together. After the labor, Britney checked in consistently to ensure that we were supported in our adjustment to the 4th trimester.
Britney's help was absolutely necessary for filling the care gaps of a typical medicalized birth. Mental health, physical comfort, and gentle interventions are often ignored because the medical system prioritizes getting the baby out safely and cheaply. Before the birth we were not entirely sure whether having a doula would be worthwhile, but now we would never consider going through it again without Britney's support.
I was particularly impressed by Britney's ability to adjust her contributions to our particular needs each moment. Her approach was the opposite of prescriptive. She gave us access to a huge wealth of high-quality knowledge and resources. We felt welcomed to pick and choose the techniques that we thought would fit our personalities. When having a child there is a lot of noise from the world about what you should do, and Britney helped us filter out this noise by asking us questions and gently guiding us through the choices we had to make without ever expressing any opinion or judgment. This reduced our stress considerably before, during, and after the delivery, even when the stakes were high and time short.
Don't second guess it, if you can get on Britney's schedule do it!
