I loved Dena and will be reaching out to her again for future births! Dena was my birth doula for a high-risk mono-di twin pregnancy. I was a second-time mom and my first was an unmedicated vaginal birth, and I was hoping to do the same for my 2nd and 3rd. I had both Dena and her partner Christina leading up to the birth, and they encouraged me to find the right provider so that if the twins were vertex/breech (and they were!), I could still deliver vaginally. They showed me a set of exercises to be ready for labor and delivery and I have to say, my labor and delivery was incredibly smooth once things got going. I had to have an induction, and Dena and Christina helped me navigate tough choices throughout the process (whether to start with pitocin or AROM, etc.). Dena attended my birth and helped me switch positions and also used counterpressure, affirmations, and other light touch to help me relax. Although no labor is "easy", I felt in control of myself throughout the process until about 9.5cm, on a low dose epidural, which I attribute to hypnobirthing practice, exercises, and Dena's continual encouragement. Some doulas are more hands off; it helped that Dena is not, and is there to help you through every contraction. Dena helped us get a great latch going immediately after birth (tandem twins!) and she stayed with us until we were in the postpartum ward, which was really helpful because everyone is exhausted by then. She also checked in again and again postpartum -- more than I expected!
As some other clients have mentioned, Dena has a no BS personality and is very straightforward and knowledgeable. She can share a ton of information if you want it, which I did, though she adapts to the needs of her client! I do not always feel comfortable with straightforwardness, but I did with Dena, because she is also warm, compassionate, and personable.
