My wife and I found Katie through a friend's very favorable recommendation of her. Before hiring Katie, in addition to our friend's reference, we read many glowing online reviews of Katie's services. They were (naturally) primarily written by women so I wanted to share a man's perspective here. As a pregnant wife's husband you might feel that a doula can't add much value if you plan to be involved yourself and attend the delivery. However, I can assure you, that Katie was invaluable part of our team in the hospital and is a great resource, informed advocate and calming/reassuring presence in any child-birth scenario even if husband is attending. Katie helped us navigate some of the unexpected optionalities during the child delivery process (even though we were already quite well informed thanks to her and our own research) explaining all potential consequences. She was also a very calming and reassuring presence in an otherwise stressful environment. Katie diplomatically and effectively communicated with the hospital staff to convey our preferences without making them feel being "instructed" by an outsider. Katie was absolutely instrumental in helping my wife accelerate contructions and guiding her (simoltenously emphatically and firmly) throughout the multi-hour waiting process as well as right after the child birth. Katie is a genuinely caring, very friendly person with very high emotional intelligence who makes you feel at ease during stressful times and who's dedicated to her clients' successful child-birth. Katie also helped us in the initially narrow down our hospital search and shared her vast experience from attending several dozen child-births in various DMV hospitals, highlighting pros and cons of different hospitals and other arrangements (OBGYN vs Midwife etc.)
I know for some families doula services might be expensive but if you can afford it both my wife and I very highly recommend Katie Baxter!
