We decided to hire a doula when expecting our first child after hearing great things about how doulas can be the difference between a positive and negative birth/postpartum experience. After interviewing 3 different doulas, we decided to hire Stacey because she came across as the most knowledgable and assertive person who matched our personalities. We really liked how Stacey was willing to be an active advocate for her customers versus other doulas who took a more passive approach by encouraging their customers to advocate for themselves.
Before the delivery day, Stacey spent quality time with us educating us on what to expect and how to prepare physically/mentally. She was always available to answer our questions and gave us some useful parenting tips. Perhaps the best advice Stacey gave us was adopting the mentality of being flexible - while we developed a birth plan together, we were always prepared in the back of our minds if plans needed to change. We discussed the different potential outcomes and what to expect in each case.
Well, surprise surprise - my wife ended up needing an emergency c-section so our birth plan completely went out the window. But we had at least discussed this potential outcome with Stacey beforehand and as a result, the process was actually not too stressful. Due to the nature of the operation and sudden timing, Stacey wasn't able to join us for the delivery but she made up for it by offering us great postpartum support.
Stacey helped us with our first bath time with the little one and provided some much needed overnight care in order for us to catch up on sleep. She also provided care to allow my wife and I to have a date night and get out of the house together for the first time. Each time Stacey helped with postpartum care, she also prepared food for us, like baking cookies or making energy balls. We always felt our baby was in safe hands with her and are grateful for Stacey's help.
