Being our first child and having no family members who I would have been comfortable with having with me during labor and delivery, I wanted a doula to help me prepare for and support me during the event of bringing my child into this world. Jessica did a great job filling this role.
I believe a doula would be helpful for anyone, even during the best case/easiest scenarios. However, I would sugggest that having a seasoned doula is especially even more helpful during the more stressful scenarios.
I had no complications or noted significant risks during my entire pregnancy. However, during a much longer than anticipated L&D, some unexpected and simply unpreventable difficulty came up. Jessica was very helpful in helping me be more prepared beforehand than I otherwise would have been, supporting me and my husband, helping with methods to handle and get through some physical and mental stressors and strategies to keep labor progressing, and was knowledgeable and useful to bounce my thoughts off of while empowering me to figure out my own choices when things stopped going according to my original plan.
If it was only my husband and I alone during this time, I think it would have been a whole lot harder/more overwhelming for us to process and figure out some things during childbirth. Jessica brought some healthy breaths of positivity and hope, information, focus, and logic that we both benefited from.
I do now have a happy healthy baby. Jessica played a useful part in helping my navigate my own birth experience leading up to this, and she was even helpful for my husband to not feel alone and overwhelmed in being my only support during the most intense parts of my childbirth. Thanks Jessica!
