My two biggest fears were delivering my child without a professional in the room I could count on and feeling unprepared for what labor would look like. I knew that there was a very low chance my OB would be the professional actually in the room during my delivery room so having a doula allowed me to know that there would be an experienced and trusted person who knew my preferences and was going to support me in advocating for those things. Working with a doula not only helped me feel educated and prepared but it encouraged me to explore what my hopes and needs were. I went into my birthing experience with a deeper understanding of labor that left me feeling empowered.
We first met with Natasha because she brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and is local. However, we decided to work with her because of the intrinsic qualities she possesses. Natasha has a calming, kind and nurturing presence. We knew that she was passionate about her work and had what it takes to hold space for our fears while encouraging us to advocate.
As a husband, I honestly didn’t even know what a doula was or what they did. After being convinced by my wife to hire one, I quickly saw the benefit. There is so much that the non-childbearing partner doesn’t understand or doesn’t think about until someone cues them in on it. There is also a vagueness to the role of the support person in the pregnancy and labor process for most support people. All of these things . were answered with great information, confidence, and compassion from Natasha. She brought such care and tenderness to our experience, but more importantly for me as a support person, she brought information. Natasha made me feel so confident and prepared for the experience, and this is something that I will forever be grateful to her for.
