This review is for Dads and partners that are doubting the worth of hiring a doula. I was right there with you. Why would we hire someone to just get water and tell you when to push- don't the nurses do that? My wife and I have had one child without a doula and one child with a doula (Char), and we, yes, I said “we,” would never have another child without a doula again. For as long as Char is in the business, she will be our doula!
So why have a doula? 1) Resources and content for pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. 2) Emotional and Physical support for both the mother and father. 3) Advocacy. 4) Knowledge and experience. 5) Consistency. 6) Peace of Mind.
I pride myself on my ability to research and become a subject matter expert, but no amount of research will give you the same knowledge and understanding as someone who does this for a living, i.e., real-world experience. Char provides a packet of details and information she has learned over many years and almost 600 births, as well as in-person and virtual meetings for you to ask questions, or in most cases, for her to read your mind and just provide you the info you wanted to know or didn’t even know to ask.
She told us what to do during early labor so that we didn’t have to just sit in the hospital. When we went to the hospital, Char was right there within the hour. Having someone there who knew what to expect and help get ice chips or help with comfortable laboring positions, gave me more time to just be present and hold my wife’s hand. You will have multiple doctors and nurses coming in and out of the room. Char was our constant. She was with us the entire time and was able to relay information and explain things in a way that was much more calming, in addition to being an advocate for us in what our preferences and wishes were. Hiring Char made all the difference in having a positive birth experience!
