We decided to add a doula to our team, near the very end of pregnancy, after declaring to my husband that I wanted to go unmedicated and labor at home as long as possible. We knew we would need extra support to navigate the unknown, as this was our first. We had taken Sarah’s birthing course (also recommend) and decided to reach out to her and cross our fingers that she had last minute availability. Lucky for us Sarah seems to be everywhere at once and somehow made it work! Our plan was to have my husband be my #1 person and to have Sarah be there for extra support. Having a doula didn’t change how involved my husband was, it just made us both more confident and able to focus. She was available and very responsive from the moment we hired her all the way through our postpartum follow-up. Her support got us through all the ups and downs of labor and decision making. When my labor wasn’t progressing she had suggestions, when it stalled she let me call her and talk options, she guided us through each phase and was there to recommend when to head into the hospital. Throughout it all she had a calm and collected demeanor. I am convinced her support is a big reason my son’s birth went how I had planned! Not to mention the memories we will forever have thanks to her beautiful photography!! Something I didn’t know I was going to need while trying to piece together my birth experience. I am so thankful for the support, confidence, and pictures Sarah gave us that day!
