My wife Joy and I hired Stephanie as our doula for the home birth of our 5th child, Michael, and she was absolutely wonderful. She visited us a couple of times leading up to the birth date so we could talk about our plan and what Joy and I wanted. She took notes and asked questions so she could get to know us both and understand what our expectations were.
Once Joy went into labor, Stephanie was there in support with warmth, encouragement, and a super positive presence. We decided that it would be a good idea for everyone to eat before Joy transitioned into active labor so Stephanie was supporting Joy while I made us some homemade pizza!. With the exception of the moment of Michael's birth, that was one of my favorite parts of the day! Stephanie and I took turns rubbing her back, giving counter pressure, and offering Joy words of encouragement during the duration of her labor and right up to the moment that Michael was born. It truly felt like a team with Stephanie and our 2 midwives. Even in post-partum, Stephanie routinely checked in to see how we were doing and offer kind words in support.
To all the Dad's out there, just remember our role is important. We need to support our wives the best we can while they are in labor. Sometimes the hospital environment can get a little chaotic and there comes a point where you can't really communicate with your spouse once she's transitioned. It really helps to have a doula like Stephanie there with you to talk things out with, process a situation, or just give you a minute to re-group. I'm so grateful to Stephanie for helping me be the best support version of myself. I don't think we will be having a 6th child but if we did, I would hire Stephanie!
