As I sit here 3 weeks postpartum feeding my beautiful baby girl and am reflecting on her journey into the world, one aspect that I wholeheartedly believe made the transition for motherhood and new life easier was hiring Barbie as my doula.
As a first time mom, I had only glimpses into what labor would entail and was intimidated by (ironically enough) both the surplus and lack there of information.
My primary goal, besides a healthy baby, was to have a positive birth experience for both my partner and I where we felt both in control and grounded. Barbie was instrumental in this. Our prenatal visits were incredibly warm and constructive, Barbie took her time and gave us her full attention as we explored different scenarios and provided balanced and educational feedback which I could tell was drawn off her vast experience. She is incredibly inclusive and I felt absolutely no judgement or discernible bias - she truly met us where we were at, enthusiastically.
During labor, which took an unexpected turn towards induction, Barbie was incredibly supportive and available through a stressful time. She heard my concerns and fears, validated and affirmed me and ultimately - she empowered a beautiful, positive birth for myself and my husband.
If you are on the fence about whether or not to hire a doula, I strongly encourage you to speak to Barbie and consider having her as part of your birth or postpartum story. If we decide to have another child in the future, I will be calling to have her support in both these areas!
