I originally reached out to learn about Midwest Doulas’ postpartum doula services, but immediately after our first conversation with Justine, I told my husband we should work with her for our birth instead. I had been experiencing a lot of anxiety and fear around birth, and I felt a huge sense of relief after our initial meeting. Justine’s birth experience; balanced, evidence-based approach; and global perspective on birth practices aligned extremely well with our values and vision for pregnancy and birth. My husband also really appreciated that he’d have support from Justine during the process as well, as partners are often unsure of what to do or how best to support the birthing person in the moment.
When we learned I was going to be induced at 37 weeks, we talked with Justine the next morning and walked through what to expect during the process. We felt extremely prepared for what was ahead, thanks to her education, support and our birth classes. During three-day induction, Justine supported us via phone and text, and joined us in person during active labor and birth. She had an excellent rapport and collaborative approach with our midwives and nurses, and she knew them from previous births. We were so relieved when she walked into the room, and she provided hands-on and emotional support for both of us during the rest of the process. Birth is extremely hard work, but our birth was also incredibly joyful because everyone in the room was so supportive, happy and excited for us.
