I’ll just say the truth: my husband and I don’t always do well together in high stress situations. I was really nervous that an anticipated long labor—especially because I’m medically high risk— would not bring out the best in our partnership, and that wasn’t at all what I wanted during such a special and important moment for our family. I hoped that hiring a doula to support us through decision making and navigating an unknown process would be a way to mitigate anxiety that can make us quick to snap at one another. It was SO worth it. I could not have felt more seen and supported by my husband during labor, and I 100% credit Sarah with giving us both the bandwidth and support to be fully present rather than flustered or frustrated. From the get-go we were making lots of decisions about my labor process that I hadn’t totally anticipated and Sarah walked us through each one with context and without judgment. I can’t even articulate how comforting it is to have an educated and informed person in your corner, who knows what your hopes & goals are, to look to in moments of uncertainty. She stayed in touch during my long induction process and helped me have the confidence to advocate for myself and listen to my gut instincts. During the later stages of my labor I felt like every time I had a moment of uncertainty she was *right* there with me already anticipating my need for reassurance or clarifications. The postpartum follow up has felt so kind and the photos were a beautiful reminder of what my body accomplished. I couldn’t be more grateful for my doula experience and for TBC in general.
