When my husband and I first found out we were pregnant, we were on the fence about hiring a doula. Initially, I was convinced that my husband should be my only support person during birth to create a more intimate environment. That said, as time went on and we learned more about the significant impact doulas have on improving birth outcomes, we realized that a doula could be well worth it and could support my husband in supporting me. We found Barbie on the DONA website and after an initial phone call felt that she was a great fit for us, but I'm realizing now that it's not just about fit — I think she'd be the perfect doula for any family! Her knowledge, compassion, and commitment to being totally available to families as birth nears (plus during the postpartum period) provided so much reassuring comfort as we navigated our first pregnancy/first delivery! I had hopes of delivering in a hospital setting with minimal intervention, and once the intensity of labor and transition set in, Barbie's presence, support, and gentle reassurances really helped us stay on that course. I am so grateful for the birth experience I had, and I truly don't think it would have been the same without Barbie in the room. She meshed so well with our midwives/nurses/everyone we encountered in the hospital. It truly felt like we had a dream team working with us throughout the process. We are so grateful and would absolutely recommend her to any of our future birthing friends in the area! One last thing I want to add — when we mentioned to our midwives that we planned to work with Barbie, they were all ecstatic to hear that and only had wonderful things to say, which only added to our confidence! It was nice to be working with someone who had extensive experience in the area and whose reputation preceded her.
