Testimonial for Beth Scheppke, CD (CHB), CBC

I am almost one year postpartum and still reflect on the birth of my daughter every day. It was a long labor, contractions starting in earnest on a Sunday evening and baby was born in the minutes before Wednesday. Despite stacked contractions and back labor, I was never afraid. Because Beth was with us! She was completely present and stayed with us for over 24 hours, seeing me through the drive to the hospital, 4-hour triage, epidural placement, hours and hours of labor at the hospital, and then hours of pushing. She was there for it all; her guidance, wise words, humor, and love made me feel strong and supported every minute of the journey. We saw countless nurses and midwives but Beth was a constant. Her voice wove through the others and there were moments when I only heard her, guiding and cheering me on. And I’ll never forget when, in between contractions when labor had stalled and I was antsy, Beth asked if I wanted to brush my teeth and wash my face. How did she know that’s exactly what I wanted to do in that moment? I needed to feel like myself, to feel human, something that can seem impossible when hooked up to machines and tubes on a hospital bed. Beth recognized the surreality of the situation and, instead of ignoring it, laughed with me at the absurdity. The pain truly recedes in my memory of labor, but moments like laughing with Beth and my partner are what I remember most vividly.

The pre-birth meetings and postpartum visits we had with Beth were so powerful and informative. Every question we had, no matter how neurotic or absurd, was treated with respect. The most meaningful takeaway from our experience is that sometimes help is essential and we all deserve to be supported and held, especially in our most vulnerable moments. As my partner says, “Simply, I cannot imagine anyone as helpful and supportive as Beth.” She is still a presence in our lives and may even be a deciding factor in where we have our next child!
