Words to describe Rachel: safe, gentle, soulful, knowledgeable, calming, present, creative, empathic, intuitive, connected. They are able to create and hold sacred space for all the complexity that comes with pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, including the hard and taboo parts. And, very importantly, they were amazing with our two large and very rambunctious dogs.
Our birth journey didn’t go the way we hoped. We went from preparing for an unmedicated birth to a planned cesarean for a breech baby. Rachel offered endless support throughout the whole process, from giving practical recommendations (including referrals to chiropractic and lactation support) to holding space for my grief and anxiety about surgical birth. They were a calming presence in the operating room and I cannot express how deeply healing it is to see the photos they took of our daughter being born, since I couldn’t see it myself while it was happening. Rachel helped to facilitate skin to skin in the OR which was so invaluable, and supported our journey with breastfeeding. Even though the birth didn’t go how we planned, it went as beautifully and perfectly as it could have and we are certain that Rachel is the reason for that.
Postpartum support from Rachel was also a game changer. They helped us feel more confident as parents and more grounded in what feels right for us as a family, which was tricky to navigate in early days. If we are ever lucky enough to have a second child, we would want Rachel by our side again.
