I’m 15 months postpartum, and if I’m transparent, I’m still not totally okay. A standard doula will support you through antenatal appointments and quell the fears and pangs of anxiety, sure. They’ll do everything to make sure that you experience a birth that’s close to your articulated preferences. And then, maybe your birth goes a bit off the rails— outside the realm of what you could ever have expected. That’s when the doula matters more than ever— and I lucked out. Amber saw me through 50+ hours of induction/labor, offered unwavering encouragement as I pushed for three of those hours, and, most importantly, helped me to accept that I’d need the C-section that had been my actual worst fear. She was there when I encountered even more complications in the days and months following delivery. She brings clarity, reality, and validation to whatever you’re experiencing, in a way that helps you to remember your worth and your rights— and to feel empowered to make your own decision. Any time I’ve felt unmoored, Amber has been there to provide grounding support and unfathomable kindness.
