Shamika, from our first interview to our last postnatal visit, was consistent in her support of our plans, and offered advice for every doubt or question I had. Two months prior to the birth of our son, my mother passed due to breast cancer, and Shamika was, quite honestly, just wonderful. It was an incredibly difficult time for our family, and Shamika helped me prepare for the struggles ahead by becoming a part of my village. She kept me honest with myself and the expectations I had for the entire experience of welcoming our child.
