I matched with Alyx pretty late in my pregnancy (the week before I went into labor--we barely had time for a get-to-know-you visit!). When I met her I felt an immediate sense of action, excitement, and empowerment from her and knew she was the right choice!
Alyx was an angel from the get-go: hyping me up while in the early stages, and once I reached active labor she was instrumental in making sure I stayed hydrated, supporting me and my needs during contractions, and being mine and my baby's advocate to the healthcare staff. She helped me stay focused on the most important thing: my baby and getting her here safely. I had planned on a natural birth at the birth center but ended up getting transferred to the hospital. I was tired after what felt like an eternity, and frustrated that my birth plan was falling apart. I was being very stubborn about receiving pain management. There was a point where Alyx looked into my eyes and said, "Mama, there is a difference between laboring and suffering, and you are suffering." That gave me the courage I needed to get the epidural, which ended up being the best thing for my labor and my baby! I got to finally have a rest, and when I felt like pushing I was in a much better mental state and knew I could do it. Four hours later, my perfect baby girl emerged into the wide wide world!
I feel so incredibly blessed to have had such a positive birth experience, even after 52 total hours of labor, and owe a great deal of my happy birth memories to Alyx's involvement. She was amazing during labor and so helpful and considerate afterward! She has such a strong, tender heart and truly cares for her clients and their babies. I am so grateful to have had her as my doula! I believe that a doula that understands you and understands the difficulty and miracle of bringing new life into the world is an essential right of laboring persons: everyone deserves support from someone they trust, and I trust her with my life.
