We started working with Jean several months before our due date. She expertly walked us through the process of deciding what our birth preferences were in a way that was completely non-judgemental and supportive of all types of goals for our birthing process, while also giving us the necessary materials and time/space to think about what we wanted. She asked great questions to determine what kind of environment and emotional support I was looking for for the birth, which was something I was having a harder time figuring out before her help. She was a wonderful sounding board during the final few weeks of labor and often checked in to see how we were doing, which was very appreciated. During several days of prodromal labor, she was an awesome resource as a listening ear, guidance on ways to encourage active labor, and when to give our medical providers a call.
During our time at the hospital, Jean was absolutely amazing. She made our delivery room (which was in triage as the "real" rooms were full!) a comfortable 'den' for laboring and was amazing at anticipating needs without either me or my birth partner asking (or often even realizing what we needed). Her experience led her to call in our midwife when necessary, which was not something my birth partner would have known to do or even been able to as he was helping me through every contraction. It was so wonderful to have another pair of hands and Jean's calm and reassuring presence throughout the delivery. Her affirming words throughout were incredibly motivating and absolutely helped us achieve our goal of an unmedicated vaginal delivery.
