Having a doula was high on my list of priorities as a first time birthing parent. My partner and I were matched with Jamie after describing our desire for a calming environment and our family's multicultural needs. Jamie's serene demeanor made me feel at ease. Each time we spoke, she was armed with information, much of which we did not have knowledge about and pointed us toward valuable resources. Jamie was very professional, which helped in times when our choices did not align with her recommendations. She is a natural listener and helped provide her perspective and experience, while also giving us the time and space to arrive at our own decisions about what was best for our family. While I was in early labor, Jamie and my partner were in regular communication and she provided helpful counsel via phone and text at all hours, helping me to significantly prolong my time at home. In fact, she sent me one of the most powerful, positive messages I've ever received, which I kept coming back to during contractions. At the hospital, Jamie stayed by my side throughout (and let me squeeze her hand to bits), again helping me make the decisions that were best for me. She advocated for me and my preferences, served as an extra set of hands and, importantly, led my partner through the process. When new symptoms would arise, she would jump into action and provide the reassurance I needed to get me through. Before each step, she would explain what she anticipated or how she's seen it done before to help me feel prepared and safe. She would regularly check in with me but I also trusted her to make decisions that she knew I would want based on our many prior conversations. For example, she figured I would want pictures/videos and after checking with my partner, she went ahead even though I had never explicitly told her I wanted them. Afterwards, I was so grateful that she had captured those precious moments that I will never experience ever again. We love you, Jamie!
