When we decided to have a baby, we put a lot of thought into everything. From prenatal vitamins to where the baby would sleep, we talked about it all. However, in all our discussions, the subject of a doula never came up. I just assumed it would be the hospital staff and my husband in the room during labor. I didn’t even know what a doula was or why one would be helpful.
Boy, am I SO glad it was suggested to me! Looking back, I don’t know how I would have survived without our doula Lo! She was nothing short of amazing.
Lo gave us helpful reading materials in preparation for both the birth and new parenthood. She also had us fill out paperwork that really got me thinking about the type of labor and delivery experience I wanted.
When the big day finally came, Lo was there every step of the way. She offered helpful position advice, made sure I had cool wash cloths and ice, held my hair back when I was sick, and took pictures at my request. She encouraged me to rest when I could and offered me snacks to keep my energy up. She also helped my husband by acting as his tag team partner.
After the delivery, my son unfortunately wasn’t breathing on his own and had to go to the NICU. It was very scary, but Lo stayed with me and offered words of comfort while my husband went with our son. She made sure I was completely taken care of before she finally left the hospital. And in the days following the birth, I always knew she was just a phone call away. In fact, I ended up having PPD/PPA, and when I let Lo know, she offered invaluable resources. That was so helpful during such a chaotic time.
Overall, I can’t recommend Lo enough. When you are going through the hardest experience of your life, you need someone there who is going to make sure you’re so cared for that you can 100% focus on getting your baby into the world. I'm so grateful she was my person.
