Having a Doula was a life changer and I would recommend this to anyone. Discussing my birth plan in advance with an advocate allowed me to take comfort in knowing someone was looking out for me, who wasn't emotionally hijacked when I was in delivery. Because of this, my Doula was able to negotiate an 80% reduction in morphine for my emergency delivery and that was enough for me to get through it! I was so grateful to her for understanding what I needed and being my rock when I coudln't speak for myself. My husband wasn't a very hands-on guy, so having her was a blessing. And the foot rubs and funny stories while I was in labour were fantastic! It's also a great way to keep your mother (or mother-in-law) out of the hospital rooms as they limit it to 2 people in most places. I also had a Doula present ofr my secind delivery, which was an emergency C-section. I felt calm knowing she was there looking out for me.
The after care visit, especially for a new mom, is critical as there is so much confusion and nervousness in the beginning. Having an expereinced professional and fellow mom is such a gift!
