We interviewed a few doulas before deciding to go with Amithyst, and what drew us to her initially was her experience with pregnancy loss, something that we had recently experienced at the time and wanted to be sensitive about. We had multiple appointments with Amithyst during the pregnancy, allowing us to get to know her a bit, and she provided much needed emotional support during the week I went overdue when I was dealing with prodromal labor and feeling discouraged. When it was time for our son’s arrival, Amithyst provided help and relief when needed for my husband, who was my preferred support person during labor. While our planned home birth went beautifully, we experienced some complications several hours after our son was born, resulting in an overnight hospital stay; Amithyst provided emotional support during this time as well.
We had hired Amithyst for postpartum doula services as well but weren’t sure what schedule or specific services would fit our family best. Amithyst was flexible and helpful navigating the process of figuring this out. She continued providing desperately needed emotional support for this anxious, sleep-deprived, clueless first-time mama, helped with laundry and dishes, gave me breaks for self-care, and taught me several tricks to make parenting a little easier. I literally cried as she was leaving after our last session with her.
We ended up adding far more hours than we started with, partly due to a need for child care when previous arrangements fell through during my transition back to work. We are SO grateful that Amithyst was willing to work with us through that crisis.
We hope Amithyst isn’t sick of us because we fully plan on hiring her again should we be blessed with another living child.
