Maria is an excellent doula, and my husband and I really enjoyed working with her around the birth of our second child. Because we’d been through labor before, we thought we wanted a doula who would just be around for the birth. But Maria gently insisted on meeting with us a couple of times before Baby came; and this ended up being really helpful! She impressed me right away. We had a home birth for our first child, and ran into some complications. I told Maria about them, and her first reaction was to indicate that she would be willing to stay with us longer than usual after the birth of our second child. We had the second child at home, too, and Maria did, in fact, stay longer to make sure we were well-supported even after the midwives left. Maria was also excellent with our oldest child. She provided lots of resources to help us educate him about childbirth, and she spent a good portion of her second prenatal visit talking to him and drawing pictures about the big changes that were coming, things like drawing how the family would look and what the weather might be like the day Baby would come. She tailored the activities to be very appropriate for our three year old, and she knew how to walk that fine balance between leading his attention toward the topic at hand and letting him wander in the direction that his mind took him. During that visit, Maria also taught my husband how to support me in labor through very gentle massage—massage that would help me but not exhaust him. He used this massage while I was in labor, and that helped me enormously. Maria also visited us after Baby arrived, teaching us about infant massage.
