Back in 2019, I went through a rough pregnancy. Our baby was colicky. I had no idea how to take care him or myself as a first time mom. I thought those sleepless nights and stressful moments would only last for a short time.
However, I was wrong.
Not getting sleep or time to recover from delivery, I quickly went into a deep postpartum depression. That was the darkest place that I would never want to be back, and the recovery took over a year and half.
Most women who had postpartum depression before will end up having it again. So, as soon as we found out we would have second child, I started building a short-term supporting system. One of the critical moves was hiring a postpartum doula, Gen.
Gen helped to prepare the meals, clean the house, do laundry, deal with groceries, clean dishes/bottles, and hold the baby whenever needed. She taught me how to use the baby carrier correctly and different ways to claim the baby when our daughter is fussy. Gen also ensured I got enough rest to recover and showed me different approaches to be more effective with housework.
During the six weeks that Gen was with us, we didn’t eat a single TV dinner, which we had a lot with our first kid. We were struggling to find the formula. She keeps her eyes on the shelves whenever she does her grocery runs. Our dishwasher, garbage disposal, and washing machine decided to go out together in the same week. Gen cleaned all the dishes by hand and offered to use her washer to wash our clothes while we got things fixed. Many other tiny things she did became a great help later. I have to say; she took most of the stress out of me.
Six months after our second child was borned, I’m pretty sure I have been the odds of not having postpartum depression this time. Thanks to Gen's hard work. I highly recommend her to anyone is looking for hiring a postpartum doula.
