When we got pregnant with our son, a doula was not in our birth plan. My midwife actually talked me into it, saying while we may not know the provider delivering our baby, a doula was someone in the delivery room we'd already have a bond with. I'm so glad she convinced me, because Janna was the lifeline of my 44 hour labor and absolutely invaluable.
We met with Janna virtually and in person several times leading up to birth. She taught us everything from what to expect during labor and postpartum realities. Most importantly she taught us practical techniques and skills for coping with labor. She also helped us navigate the emotional side of things, allowing us to let go of some fears and stressors. Janna's thoughtful curriculum was so useful, it was her lessons that enabled me to kickstart my stalled labor.
Everything Janna taught us was empowering. My husband felt confident knowing he now had the tools to care for me and participate in labor and delivery. I felt relieved knowing Janna and my husband were well equipped to help me. I knew I'd be able to focus on the task at hand and trust them to take care of the rest.
During labor Janna was absolutely vital. I would not have had the calm, relatively relaxed birth experience I did if it wasn't for her. On top of using a variety of techniques to help me manage contractions, she also made sure I stayed hydrated and fed. She reminded me of my goals and birth plan at critical moments. I think she must have massaged my back for over 6 hours. I am forever grateful!
If you are considering a doula, know that Janna's calm confidence and expertise will empower you and your partner to have the birth of your dreams.
