When I first interviewed Maria, I was excited by her warmth and enthusiasm, her clear commitment to advocating for birthers, and her intelligence. I was looking for someone who could help me through some anxieties I had from my first birth experience, and I knew Maria would bring a grounded, smart approach. Throughout my pregnancy, I asked her the tough questions I was trying to work through (where to birth? how to manage pelvic floor issues during pregnancy? what should my postpartum period look like?), and she always came back with resources and great thoughts to share, tapped from her extensive network and her own trainings and research. In my pre-birth meetings with her she shared positions and movements and yoga poses to support my body in the following weeks. I also experienced days of prodromal labor. Maria's encouragement and positivity was vital during that strange limbo time. She validated and affirmed my emotions, offered some ideas for self-care and baby positioning, and helped me understand what was happening.
