My wife and I were connected with Melissa through an intial zoom call and we immediately knew she was the one for us. We appreciated how she was a great combination of always presenting us with research/science based facts about the birthing process while also being spiritual. As an LGBT couple we also felt like she was a perfect fit for us - for example, she made sure at the hospital that we were both called Mom since that's how we wanted to be referred to. She knew the things to think about and ask that were specific to an LGBT couple that we probably wouldn't have even thought about if it weren't for her.
To be honest, I had no idea what a doula really was before we hired Melissa but after my pregnancy and birthing experience I literally cannot imagine Melissa not being there. During my pregnancy she was always so responsive to texts and was very flexible with meeting times. Whnever we met with her she helped both my wife and I feel so comfortable to ask and say anything. I felt very nervous about the birth itself and she was really helpful in talking through certain things with me. She never made me feel stupid for asking the most basic questions and I felt more confident just knowing I had her by my side along the way. At the actual birth she was simply the best! I ended up needing to be induced (baby would've stayed inside me forever I think) and while he and I both ended up totally healthy it was a traumatic experience for my wife and I. Melissa provided us with support while we were there and made me feel comfortable in the end when we had to go with an emergency c-section. While she was an absolute rockstar for me from day 1, I know that for my wife she was truly a godsend when things got a bit scary late in the birth! Melissa will be amazing for the birthing person but will be what your partner doesn't even know they need yet.
We love Melissa so much and are hopeful that int he future we will be able to use her again!
