Britt and I worked together for my third pregnancy where I planned to have a natural birth at Our Birthing Center after two, medicated hospital births for my older girls. What I appreciated most about Britt was her warm but direct approach to the work. Personally, I wasn’t looking for ‘rainbows and butterflies’ from a doula. I had been through labor twice already–I knew it was painful and hard. And while I was confident in my decision to have a natural birth with our third child, I was also, frankly, terrified. I worried I was bad at pushing–could I really do this?
Britt was just what I needed. Before, and especially during the birth, she would directly address my worries: this would be incredibly hard and painful AND I absolutely could do it. No matter the size of my babe, I was made for this. By making space for my fears, Britt allowed me to hand a little bit of those fears over to her–giving me the capacity to focus on bringing my sweet (and big!) baby boy into his world. He was a sneaky third baby–not the watermelon seed I had hoped for–and my labor was longer than I expected and not uncomplicated. I am grateful to Britt for the belief she modeled for me so I could believe in myself. It is in no small part to her support that, for my final pregnancy, I had the birth experience I had imagined.
