Testimonial for Suzanne Ledbetter, CD
I'll never forget Suzanne. She held, comforted, and guided me through the scariest part of my most recent and likely last birthing experience. My first two births were at hospitals and I was planning on another hospital birth for my third as well, but Suzanne encouraged me to look into a birth center as being a better fit for what I was hoping for. So, at 39 weeks pregnant, I switched to a birth center. At 40 weeks, I gave birth in a tub with Suzanne talking me through my fear of pushing based on what my body wanted to do, rather than being coached by a nurse doing counts. She just held me and said just the right things to help me feel like everything was going to be ok, and I was doing what I was supposed to. The birth ended up being the fastest, least painful, and most calm of my three unmedicated births. While this is in part because it was my third rodeo, it would have been quite different if I didn't have Suzanne to recommend the birth center, where I could birth in a tub (not allowed by hospitals), and if I didn't have her to talk me through my fears. On a related note, I highly recommend that everyone doing natural birth choose a location that allows water births!!! Being in the tub for transition and pushing made such a huge difference in the amount of pain I felt. I have no idea how the water does that, but it felt like the water cut the pain in half. I'm so glad Suzanne recommended water birthing to me. Her assuredness, calmness, warmth, and wisdom are what everyone would hope for in a doula.
