The concept of allowing a person into a vulnerable and intimate space in birthing your child is strange to comprehend, but after meeting Barbie and learning about her values and approach, many of my doubts dissolved. I had real concerns that I might be alone in labor (despite a scheduled C section), so we both desired to have Barbie participate in our birthing journey. We worked out a contract that truly benefited our specific needs. Barbie answered my call at 4am when I was laboring alone with two toddlers fast asleep, advised me on how to care for myself and to rest with the impending birth. She offered me professional advice and a secure feeling at a time of day where it was hard to rely on anyone else. In the ER she occupied a role of interpreting doctor language and monitoring my well being and emotional state. Barbie supported me during moments of distress where I retreated to former trauma and was stable and clear minded, she prepped my sister to support me in the OR and nourished her with snacks and she accompanied us in surgery and captured incredible photos of my son's arrival to share with my husband. Barbie encouraged extra time holding baby and went with him to recovery, allowing my sister to be with me for the rest of surgery. It's hard to find words to describe Barbie's worth--she's an invaluable contributor and I'm grateful the universe allowed for me to know her and include her in my story. She's been so reliable postpartum: besides the initial meeting to reflect on the birth, she's been by my side to nourish us AND to help feed my newborn formula when his brother was hospitalized. I'm emotional just thinking about it and so fortunate to have connected with this wonderful human who identifies with where I'm at in life-- leading an unconventional lifestyle raising 3 boys, often alone due to my partner's career--and is encouraging me with the knowledge and tools to help me as I grow into this next version of myself. Thank you Barbie, forever!
